NEW YORK, NY – The men's soccer team battled Sarah Lawrence in cold weather and constant rain Thursday evening, and earned a 5-1 victory. The game was the first since nearly a month off from playing. The Maccabees improved to 3-5 on the season.
David Banoun got things going early, with a quick goal only 5 minutes into play. Yaniv Lautman gave him a perfect pass over the final row of defenders for the score. Lautman followed that assist with a goal of his own, this time from a similar pass near midfield from Joseph Itkis. The 2-0 advantage would stand for more than 20 minutes before Sarah Lawrence scored at the 39 minute mark. The teams would go into the half with the score 2-1.
Nearly ten minutes into the second half, the Maccabees regained their two goal lead, when Yaniv Lautman scored with a perfect header off a corner kick from Zach Stern. Yaniv's second goal of the game is also the 5th of the season to lead Yeshiva. Zach's assist put him at 4 on the season, also a team high.
The Maccabees weren't done yet however, as freshman newcomer Elezir Nuvakhov came off the bench to score his first goal of the season, a goal that came off a rebound in front of the net. Yeshiva got one more goal from junior #Achiya Yaffe, and unlikely goal considering he is a defender. Yaffe scored on his second shot on goal in the game, a floater that just got over the leap of the goalkeeper. It was his first goal as a Maccabee.
Mark Rocklin turned in a strong performance in net, making 3 saves to earn the win. Moshe Azizollahoff came in to relieve Mark with just over 5 minutes to go, and made one save for Yeshiva.
The Maccabees will be traveling to Old Westbury on Sunday for a 1PM game.
