NEW YORK - Capital One announced its Academic All-District Men's Track/Cross Country teams Thursday afternoon, and Yeshiva University senior men's cross country student-athlete and two-time team captain,
Samuel Cohen (Thornhill, Ont.) has been named to the corporation's NCAA Division III, District 3 squad.
Cohen is now one of 97 student-athletes in Division III who will be placed on the ballot for Capital One Academic All-America honors, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The Division III squad is expected to be announced on June 25 (Tue.).
The Yeshiva Darchei Torah School (North York, Ont.) alumnus was named to the Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference (HVMAC) all-confererence team in 2011 and 2012, placing first and second in its year-end championships, respectively. Ironically, Cohen's three-year career on the cross country course were his first experience in organized athletics at any level, and his efforts helped YU to three-straight HVMAC team championships (2010-12).
Academically, Cohen earned a 3.90 grade point average (4.0 scale) as a major in mathematics and pre-engineering, along with a minor in finance. Additionally, like all Yeshiva undergraduate students, Cohen endured a dual curriculum, comprised of taking Jewish studies classes (in Hebrew) during the morning hours, before undertaking his secular-degree studies in the afternoon and evening.
Recently, Cohen was presented with the Normal Palefski Award at Yeshiva's annual athletics awards dinner, which is given to the top graduating male scholar-athlete at the university.
Cohen spread his knowledge to others both in and out of the YU community, as well. He served as a peer tutor on the Yeshiva campus, while also helping as a member of Project START Science! - an initiative where YU students and professors designed and implemented science curricular modules in local public schools in the New York area. Cohen was also a member of the Yeshiva Drama Society during his time on campus.
