Maccabees open 2008 season with 3-0 loss to John Jay

(New York, NY) - Senior Aviva Miller (Teaneck, NJ/Frisch) registered eight digs and senior Adira Katlowitz (Brooklyn, NY/Yeshiva Flatbush) added three kills, but the Yeshiva University Women's Volleyball team opened the 2008 season with a 3-0 loss to John Jay College on Wednesday night at John Jay College.

John Jay won the match 25-1, 25-8, and 25-16 during the first varsity match in Yeshiva Volleyball history. The Maccabees competed as a club program during the 2007 season, and in 2008 will compete in the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC). Yeshiva played an outstanding defensive match, forcing John Jay to hit only .119 as the Bloodhounds registered only 16 kills over three sets, but John Jay combined for 31 service aces compared to two for Yeshiva, creating much of the disparity for the match. The Maccabees also registered 15 digs compared to John Jay's 11.

Also for YU, junior Shira Apfel (West Hempstead, NY/YUHS) and senior Adira Katlowitz (Brooklyn, NY/Yeshiva Flatbush) registered the first two service aces in Yeshiva Women's Volleyball history.

The Maccabees return to action on Thursday, Sept. 4 when the host Cooper Union at 8:00 p.m. The match will be played at the Hunter College gymnasium.
