(New York, NY) - Senior Aviva Miller (Teaneck, NJ/Frisch) had a monster match with four kills, seven digs, and a .429 attack percentage, and junior Tzivya Block (Teaneck, NJ/Bruriah) had two kills, seven assists, nine service aces, and six digs as the Yeshiva University Women's Volleyball scored the historic first win in program history with a 3-0 win over Medgar Evers on Sunday at Baruch College. After losing the opening round of a tri-match with the College of Saint Elizabeth, the Maccabees downed Medgar Evers to close to day and improve to 1-3 over and 1-1 in Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) play.
Yeshiva won the match 25-20, 25-6, and 25-23 as they played incredible volleyball, hitting .440 as a team. The Maccabees also registered 25 service aces while allowing only two, and combined for 20 digs. YU made only four attacking errors duirng the match.
Miller and Block were sensational, but certainly not the only highlights for Yeshiva as six Maccabees registered kills. Junior Abigial Smolensky (Houston, TX/Beren Academy) had three kills, three service aces, and four digs, while senior Adira Katlowitz (Brooklyn, NY/Yeshiva Flatbush) chipped in two kills and six service aces.
The win came hours after a terrific effort during a 3-0 loss to HVWAC powerhouse Saint Elizabeth during which the Maccabees fell 25-16, 25-23, and 25-13 to the 2007 HVWAC Semifinalist. Smolensky and junior Shira Apfel (West Hempstead, NY/YUHS) registered four kills apiece, while Miller added seven digs, and Katlowitz had four service aces. Yeshiva hit a respectable .156 for the match, and combined for 21 digs and eight service aces.
Yeshiva returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 9 when they travel to Lehman College for a 6:00 p.m. match.
