Soccer Fights Back to Force Overtime but Game Ends in 2-2 Tie

Friedman scored the game tieing goal to force overtime

NEW YORK, NY - The women's soccer team hosted NYU-Polytechnic on Thursday night, in the season's final Skyline conference game. The Maccabees trailed by 1 in both halves, but came back to tie it each time. After two 10-minute extensions, neither team was able to get the game-winner, and the night ended in a 2-2 tie. Both teams finished Skyline play at 0-9-1.

The Maccabees controlled the ball much of the first half, taking 12 shots compared the Poly's 3. Of those 12 shots, 10 were on goal. Despite many opportunities to score, the Maccabees were held to one goal, a score from Atara Kanarfogel in the 29th minute that knotted the score at 1. The goal was her team-high 5th of the season and came after the goalkeeper was unable to clear a saved shot. The half ended in a 1-1 tie.

In the second half of play, the Macs controlled the ball for most of the time, although their shots were limited to 4 (3 on goal). lay continued in the 1-1 tie for almost 35 minutes before a breakaway score by Poly gave them a 2-1 advantage in the 78th minute. Unfazed by the score, the Maccabees came right back and only a minute later, scored the equalizing goal. This time, Rochelle Friedman sent a free-kick from about 20 yards out across the goalkeeper box and over the keepers head. The perfectly placed shot found the upper left part of the goal for her 3rd score of the season.

After the first 90 minutes ended without a winner, the teams battled for the next ten minutes in the first overtime period, but that too proved not enough. Although each team had an opportunity to get to win, neither could get it past their opposing goalkeeper. The teams went into the 2nd, and final, overtime tied at 2 once again.

The Maccabees were the only team to get a shot on goal in the final period, although both their shots were stopped before getting in. Perhaps the biggest play in the overtime came late in the 106th minute when NYU-Poly had an opportunity to score the game winning goal. Poly's Megan Hightower, who had already scored both her teams' goals, went on another breakaway after splitting defenders. She lined up her shot but it had a little too much english on it and hit the left post square on. That would be the closest either team would come to winning, and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Yeshiva's Julia Shrier played all 110 minutes in goal, stopping 3 shots. The Maccabees took 15 corner kicks, including 10 in the first half of play.

Up next for Yeshiva will be CCNY on the 3rd, beginning at 8PM. The "Senior Night" game will be played at Tibbetts Brook Park.
