Women’s Soccer Scores 3 but Drops Game to Purchase in Skyline Competition

NEW YORK, NY – The women's soccer team hosted the Panther's of Purchase College in a Skyline Conference game Thursday night, but couldn't overcome an early deficit to get the win. The Macs fell back 4-0 in the early going, but fought back to 4-2 at the half. Unfortunately, the Macs would get only one more goal and Purchase got the 9-3 victory. Purchase improved to 4-5-1 (2-3) while Yeshiva dropped to 0-3 (0-2).

After Purchase took a 4-0 lead in the first 23 minutes, Yeshiva's defense held them scoreless the rest of the half, while the offense scored two straight to pull within two at the half. Judith Frankiel scored first, on a breakaway shot that slid under the keeper's hands. Less than 3 minutes later, forward Atara Karnarfogel scored her second goal of the season after the goalkeeper was unable to control a corner kick and left the ball right in front of the goal for Atara to knock in.

Much like the first half, Purchase came out in the second and scored 4 straight to open an 8-2 lead and put the game out of reach for Yeshiva. However, the Macs had one more goal left in them, this time off a penalty kick from Rochelle Friedman. The kick came as a result of a handball in the box by Purchase and gave Rochelle her first goal of the season. Purchase would score once more before the game ended.

Tracy Steinberger made 3 saves in goal although she made some additional stops out of the box to prevent more shots on goal. Defensively, the Maccabees forced 12 offside calls against Purchase.

Throughout Thursday's game, the Maccabees showed their support for Breast Cancer Awareness month by wearing pink socks instead of their normal blue. They also wore pink shirts for warmups in support of the cause. Yeshiva's University and the fall athletic teams will all partake in the wearing of pink during one or more of their games in October.

The women will be on the road Sunday at the College of Staten Island for a noon game.
