Makena Owens (Sammamish, Wash.) shined in her collegiate debut Tuesday night at Baruch College, as she led the Yeshiva University women's volleyball team with a team-high-tying six kills and five service aces, to lift the Maccabees to a 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-17), season-opening victory in Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference action over visiting Medgar Evers College.
YU also received six kills from sophomore
Jackie Berger (Boca Raton, Fla.), while sophomore
Shira Genauer (Seattle, Wash.) filled the stat sheet with four kills on a team-best .429 hitting percentage, three service aces and five digs. Juniors
Kerrin Ast (St. Louis, Mo.) and
Lindsay Wess (Los Angeles, Calif.) contributed three kills and six digs, respectively, while senior captain and setter,
Moriah Green (Anchorage, Alaska) registered 16 assists in running the Maccabees' offense.
Yeshiva held a .149 to minus-.066 advantage in the hitting department, while also utilizing a 12-7 edge at the service line to keep the Cougars at bay.
Head coach Roxanne Prendergast's Yeshiva side is back in action Wednesday night (Sept. 5), when it travels to Jamaica, Queens, N.Y., for an 8 p.m., non-conference first serve at York College.
