The Yeshiva University women's soccer team kicked off the 2012 campaign in the last several days, as head coach Tony Elmore's Maccabees put forth spirited efforts Aug. 31 at Lehman and Sept. 5 versus NYU-Poly. Additionally, for her efforts in her collegiate debut in the former contest against the Lightning, freshman Natasha Bassalian (London, England) was named the inaugural Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference's (HVWAC) first Rookie of the Week of the season late Wednesday morning.

Aug. 31: at Lehman 4, Yeshiva 1

After conceding a goal to host Lehman two-plus minutes into the season opener, Yeshiva settled down and kept the deficit to 1-0 through halftime. Just under four minutes into the second half, Bassalian took a pass from fellow rookie, Jennifer Shamsian (Fr., W. Hempstead, N.Y.) and blasted an equalizing tally past the Lightning's keeper to knot the game at 1-all.

Lehman took a 2-1 lead 20 minutes later, and slotted home two insurance tallies to seal the victory.

Senior YU keeper, Shoshana Taube (Sharon, Mass.) made two saves in the Maccabees' cage defensively.

Sept. 5: NYU-Poly 5, at Yeshiva 0

The match at Tibbetts Brook Park was evenly played over the first 40 minutes, with both sides creating their share of chances on goal. NYU-Poly netted the breakthrough marker just over four minutes before halftime, and added one more goal before the break to take a 2-0 advantage.

Yeshiva utilized its speed to attack the Jays' defense for over 20 minutes to start the second half, before conceding a pair of goals on short corner kicks in the 67th and 74th minutes, respectively.

All five shots the Maccabees took on the night were on frame, including two by Shamsian and one apiece by Bassalian, junior Ashley Kandel (No. Woodmere, N.Y.) and senior Maya Fishbein (Sacramento, Calif.). Taube made five stops in goal for YU.

Elmore's side kicks off HVWAC play Sunday afternoon (Sept. 9), when it travels to Albany College of Pharmacy for a 1 p.m. opening whistle.
