NEW YORK - The Yeshiva University men's tennis team's seven-match winning streak to start the spring portion of its 2012-13 season has been aided by the efforts of freshman
Charles Saka (Deal, N.J.), and he was rewarded for his play for the second straight week by the Skyline Conference, picking up repeat Rookie of the Week praise on Monday afternoon.
Saka stepped into the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles and singles flights, respectively, last week for YU, and went 5-1 (3-0 singles, 2-1 doubles) in the process. After starting his career with a narrow loss in a second-set tiebreaker in the fall campaign, the New Jersey native has ripped off eight-consecutive victories in singles action, and owns identical 8-1 records in singles and doubles play.
Teaming with junior team captain
Jeremy Seftel (Cherry Hill, N.J.) at the No. 1 doubles flight, the pair went 2-1 last week -- including identical 8-1 triumphs on Friday (Mar. 22) and Sunday (Mar. 24) against Vaughn College and The Sage Colleges, respectively.
In singles play, Saka gutted out a three-set triumph Wednesday (Mar. 20) over Albertus Magnus's Marcus Artaiz, before sweeping Vaughn's Damian Gaona less than 48 hours later. Saka's week concluded Sunday with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in his first Skyline Conference match, against Sage's Rob Hansen.
Saka and the rest of head coach Jeff Menaker's Yeshiva squad are back in action April 4 (Thu.), when it plays host to Skyline Conference rival Purchase College for an 8 p.m. first serve at Binghamton Racquet Club in Edgewater, N.J.
