Yeshiva Athletics Plays Host to Annual Awards Dinner

Meira Lerner (right) played three sports (basketball, soccer, softball) during her Yeshiva career.
NEW YORK – Men's basketball standout Dovie Hoffman (Tarzana, Calif.), and three-sport women's star Meira Lerner (Sharon, Mass.), took home the Emille Offenbacher and Stern College of Women/Sy Syms School of Business Athletic Awards, presented to the most outstanding male and female graduating student-athletes, respectively, at Yeshiva University's Athletics Awards Dinner on Wednesday night.

Hoffman was a team captain for head coach Dr. Jonathan Halpert's squad, and finished his storied four-year career in a Maccabees uniform with 1,195 points – good for the No. 17 mark all-time at the university. Hoffman's efforts helped YU to a pair of Skyline Conference Championships appearances during his stay on campus, including his freshman (2009-10) and senior (2012-13) campaigns, and he was cited on the Skyline's all-conference second team as a junior.

Lerner was a two-time Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) all-conference selection on the soccer pitch, and in 2011-12 also suited up for the Macs' women's basketball program. A standout scholastic softball player at Maimonides prior to attending YU, she helped to start Yeshiva's first-ever club program in the sport this past spring.

Lerner also was the recipient of the Aaron Meyer Memorial Award, which is presented to the YU student-athlete who best demonstrates the spirit, selflessness and dedication to his/her team and the athletics program that was associated with Meyer – the late athletic trainer for the Maccabees.

A pair of student-athletes also garnered prestigious accolades for their efforts both in competition, and in the classroom. Senior men's cross country team captain, Sam Cohen (Thornhill, Ont.) and senior women's volleyball student-athlete, Samantha Selesny (W. Hempstead, N.Y.) were the recipients of the Norman Palefski and ECAC Merit Award, respectively, as the top male and female scholar-athletes at Yeshiva.

Cohen helped lead the Macs to three-consecutive Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference cross country titles, all while carrying a 3.90 grade-point average as a mathematics/pre-engineering major. His award is named for the late Norman Palefski, who was a ballyhooed student-athlete in the Yeshiva High School system and garnered a 4.0 GPA in his first season at YU, before a car accident took his life far too soon back in 1955.

Selesny was a starter in the front row for head coach Roxanne Prendergast's women's volleyball team this past season, and was a three-year member of the team. She sports a 3.81 GPA as a biochemistry major.

A total of 15 student-athletes received watches in recognition of their dedication as four-year letterwinners in their respective sports at Yeshiva:
