NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.— The Yeshiva University women's basketball team lost a heartbreaker in the closing seconds as the Maccabees fell to the College of New Rochelle (CNR) 68-67 in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) showdown Tuesday evening.
The heartbreaking loss by the Maccabees, eliminates them from 2015 playoff contention. They end the HVIAC portion of their schedule at 2-4 and are now 3-14 overall. The College of New Rochelle is now 10-7 overall and 3-1 in the HVIAC.
In a game that saw nine lead changes and five ties, Yeshiva took its final lead with thirty-three seconds left on a jumper by
Julia Owen to make the score 67-66.
Missed free throws in closing seconds by both teams caused the game to remain a one-point Yeshiva lead. The host Blue Angles went to the free throw line with eighteen seconds left and missed both foul shots. After the second free throw missed, CNR got the offensive rebound and drew another foul to go to the line for another pair of free throws. The Blue Angles missed both of those as well. CNR got another offensive rebound and failed to put the go ahead shot in with fourteen seconds left. Yeshiva then got a rebound and was fouled. But the Maccabees missed the front end of a one-and –one to give CNR another shot at the lead. The Blue Angels' Chelsea Thomas then connected on a lay-up with two seconds left to put CNR back ahead. Then out of a Yeshiva timeout, the Maccabees could not get a final shot off as CNR escaped with the narrow win.
Both teams led by as much as 10. Yeshiva's largest lead was 14-4 with 12:59 left in the first half and 28-18 with 2:42 to go in the opening stanza. CNR led 42-32 with 15:24 left in the second half. Yeshiva led 30-26 at halftime.
Owen had a marvelous game, netting a career-high 36 points on 15-for-24 shooting, including 4-for-8 from behind the three point arc. She also grabbed seven rebounds and had seven steals.
Stephanie Greenberg had 19 points and six steals.
Rachel Mirsky added seven points and eight rebounds for the Maccabees.
CNR was led by Jah-Leah Ellis with 21 points and 18 rebounds, while Alyssa Pechin added 18 points. Caitlin Harrison scored 14 points on 6-for-6 shooting with 13 rebounds.
Yeshiva committed just 14 turnovers compared to 25 for CNR, and the Maccabees held a 26-13 advantage on points off turnovers. Yeshiva also outscored the Blue Angels 30-24 on points in the paint.
Yeshiva returns to action on Thursday for a game at St. Joseph's-Long Island at 7 p.m.
