PURCHASE, N.Y.— The Yeshiva University baseball team lost a pair of games to Mt. St. Mary College (MSMC) as the Maccabees fell in a doubleheader to the Blue Knights, 8-2 in the first game and 7-0 in the second game.
Yeshiva is now 0-6 overall and 0-6 in the Skyline Conference this season. MSMC improved to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in the Skyline.
In game one, Yeshiva was led by
Elan Paul and
Joseph Miller with two hits each. Paul added a run and stole three bases.
Chaim Rosenberg went 1-for-4 with a run and a run batted in.
Zachary Perl had a run batted in as well in game one.
MSMC was led by Steve Notaro, Blake Keenan, Rob Peccerillo and Ryan Hayes with two hits each.
MSMC scored a run in the top of the first and another in the top of the second, before scoring two more in the third to lead 4-0 after two and a half innings of play.
Yeshiva cut the lead in half in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of runs to make the score 4-2. A single by Rosenberg scored Paul. Then later in the inning, an infield pop-up by Perl led to Rosenberg tagging up from third to score.
The score remained 4-2 into the eighth inning when the Blue Knights got another run via a sacrifice fly. Then in the ninth inning MSMC scored three unearned runs to extend the lead and move on to victory.
Benjy Blumenthal suffered the game one loss after going 6.0 innings and allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits, while striking out four.
Sean Betterly earned the game one win for MSMC. He tossed 6.0 innings and allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five batters.
In game two, the Blue Knights broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the third. MSMC then scored two more in the top of the fifth, and another two in the top of the sixth, before one more in the top of the seventh to win 7-0.
Paul led the Maccabees with two hits, a walk and a stolen base in the nightcap. Perl went 1-for-3 with a double for Yeshiva in game two.
MSMC was led by Johnny Vaccaro with three hits, while Matt Cahill went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs, two runs batted in and two stolen bases.
Jonathan Gardner suffered the game two loss by allowing seven runs (four earned) on 11 hits over 7.0 innings.
MSMC's Chris Wolfe picked up the win for the Blue Knights, allowing no runs, on three hits, while striking out six over 7.0 innings.
Yeshiva returns to action on Sunday for a doubleheader against Farmingdale State starting at noon at Taft High School.
