NEW YORK, N.Y.— The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team collected another championship and officially leave the Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) on top as the Maccabees defeated Pratt Institute 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 26-24) to close out an HVIAC dynasty.
The win by the Maccabees was the third straight HVIAC championship and the men's volleyball team's fourth championship over the last six years.
Eliakim Gartenberg was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after not only playing a great game against Pratt Institute in the championship, but an exceptional game in the semifinals earlier in the evening against Webb Institute, who Yeshiva beat 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-14) to earn a spot in the championship game. Gartenberg had eight kills (no errors) on 13 attack attempts for a .615 attack percentage against Webb, before registering 11 kills (three errors) on 27 attack attempts against Pratt Institute.
Equally as impressive was
Kolya Miller, who was practically a co-MVP alongside Gartenberg. Miller had 11 kills (four errors) on 24 attack attempts against Pratt, along with 13 digs and two block assists. In the win over Webb, he had seven kills (no errors) on 16 attack attempts.
In the win over Webb, besides the great player of Gartenberg and Miller, the Maccabees got strong games out of
Tuvia Marks with six kills and five service aces,
Benjamin Mann with eight kills,
Mishael Miller with 14 digs and
Joseph Lipton with six kills and 11 digs.
In the championship game, Marks had seven kills and five blocks, while Lipton had nine digs and four blocks.
During the three set win in the championship, the matches saw a combined 21 ties and six lead changes.
After a solid win in the first set, the second set saw the score tied 11 times. Yeshiva had a 24-21 lead, before the Cannoneers fired back with a three point rally to tie the score at 24-24. A kill by Gartenberg made the score 25-24, before an attack error by Pratt gave the Maccabees the second set win.
In the third set, Yeshiva led early and started the set with a 6-1 lead. But Pratt managed to keep it close and eventually tied the score at 13-13. Late in the set, Pratt led 24-23, before the Maccabees scampered off the last three points to win the match. A bad set, followed by two attacking errors by the Cannoneers won it for Yeshiva.
Maccabees' 2015 season ends with Yeshiva going 9-17 this season.
