TEANECK, N.J.— The Yeshiva baseball team closed out its 2015 baseball season by dueling to a hard fought 13-8 loss to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (SJCBK) at Votee Park on Thursday evening.
The loss ends the Maccabees' season at 2-23 overall, while SJCBK's season will commence in the USCAA playoffs with a 21-16 record.
Yeshiva was led by
Zev Rosenbaum who was 2-for-5 with a run, while
Shmuli Goldis was 1-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.
Benjamin Barman went 1-for-2 with two runs and a run batted in, while Joshua Gurin went 1-for-4 and scored twice.
SJCBK was led by Thomas McKenna who was 3-for-5 with a double, a homerun, four runs and a run batted in. His homerun came in the top of the first inning to lead off the game. Meanwhile Curtis Cutrone finished 2-for-3 with a double, a homerun, a run and three runs batted in. Brian Luebcke went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in.
The visiting Bears scored four runs in the top of the first inning and another in the top of the second to lead 5-0 after one and a half innings. Yeshiva came back with three runs in the bottom half of the third inning to edge closer. The inning was highlighted by a suicide squeeze play that resulted in two errors on the play by the Bears.
Joseph Miller lay down a well placed bunt with Rosenbaum breaking immediately from third base. The SJCBK pitcher picked up the ball and attempted to throw out Rosenbaum at home, but the throw went errant, allowing Rosenbaum to score. Barman, who was on second base, advanced to third and then scored when the toss home by the SJCBK catcher from the backstop got away. Then later in the inning, Goldis lifted a sacrifice fly to score Miller from third base.
Yeshiva never had the lead, but was in position to do so throughout the contest. The Maccabees, down 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth, scored three times, to make the score 7-6. The inning was capped on an RBI single to left field by Barman to knock in
Samuel Rhodes.
With the score still 7-6 after seven innings, the Bears pulled away in the final two innings, outscoring the Maccabees 6-2 over the final two innings to make the score 13-8, the final tally.
Tani Pollack suffered the loss after going 7.0 innings and allowing 10 runs (six earned) on 11 hits.
