PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team earned a hard-fought tie with Purchase College, in a Skyline Conference contest, at Purchase College Field on Wednesday evening. The Maccabees trailed twice during the match, but were able to come from behind to earn a key point in the conference standings.
Yeshiva (1-4-1, 1-2-1 Skyline) had control of the first half, outshooting Purchase (0-4-1, 0-0-1 Skyline) 10-2. However, it was the home team that was able to find the back of the net in the opening period, as a goal by Rob Cal in the 22
nd minute put the Maccabees in a 1-0 deficit.
In the second half, senior forward
Itamar Ben David received a through ball up the middle from sophomore forward
Albert Dichy and shot it past the goalkeeper to tie the match, 1-1, 57 minutes in.
Just under 12 minutes later, Dylan Hyman of Purchase received the ball off a save and banked it into the cage to give the Panthers a 2-1 advantage, putting Yeshiva in a hole for the second time in the contest.
Yeshiva would once again respond, as Ben David won a race to the loose ball and fed it to Dichy, who rifled it into the net to even the match, 2-2.
From that point on, each team had chances to score the game-winning goal before the end of regulation. In the 78
th minute, senior defender
Benjamin Aboudi shot the ball on target, but it was stopped by the Panthers' goalkeeper. Purchase had two corner kick opportunities, but Yeshiva's defense would not allow the opposition to break through. The match was tied at two after 90 minutes, and extra time was needed.
In the 95
th minute, sophomore defender
Joseph Grobman headed the ball towards the net off of a corner kick but was denied by Purchase goalkeeper, Thomas Ogrodnik. Two minutes later, the Panthers had two opportunities to win the match, but junior goalkeeper
Maor Feinstein made two key saves in a span of 13 seconds. The first extra session ended with the match still tied.
In the second overtime period, Feinstein made another clutch save in the 102
nd minute, while senior forward
Adir Alon had two shots that were off target. The match ended in a 2-2 tie as both teams earned a point in the Skyline Conference standings.
For the contest, the shots were heavily in Yeshiva's favor, 34-11. Feinstein made five saves and the Maccabees had the advantage in corner kicks, 8-6.
Yeshiva will have a home match on Thursday evening, against the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y., beginning at 7:45 p.m.
