Men's Soccer Suffers Heartbreaking Double Overtime Loss to Purchase College

TEANECK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking Skyline Conference loss to Purchase College, 2-1, in double overtime at Votee Park on Friday afternoon.

Junior midfielder Oliver Dubreus scored the match-clinching goal in the 110th minute, as he sprinted down the field to score on a breakaway.

Back in the first half, Yeshiva (5-7-0, 1-6-0 Skyline) struck first as junior defender Joseph Grobman took advantage of a free kick opportunity, as the ball bounced over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net, to put YU up by a score of 1-0, in the 35th minute. It was Grobman's first goal of his collegiate career.

Less than two minutes later, senior midfielder Kayode Tyler received a one-touch pass from junior midfielder Ramsey Heitmann off a set-piece, and drilled the ball into the back of the net to tie the match at one goal apiece.

Both teams exchanged quality chances for the remainder of regulation time, but neither side could cash in on the deciding goal, so extra time was needed.

Sophomore goalkeeper Max Goldstein made five saves in the first overtime period to keep the score tied. In the second extra session, the Maccabees were on the attack early by peppering six shots, one of them being on goal, in the first eight minutes. However, YU could not find the back of the net.

With less than a minute remaining, a set-piece by Yeshiva turned into a takeaway by Dubreus, who went down the field and provided the heroics for Purchase (7-7-2, 4-4-0 Skyline).

For the afternoon, the Panthers had the edge in shots, 33-26, and corner kicks, 11-8. Goldstein made 13 saves for the Maccabees, which ties a career-high.

Yeshiva will be back in action on Sunday for a Skyline Conference match, at the College at Old Westbury, beginning at 12:00 p.m.
