RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University baseball team concluded the 2017 season with a pair of non-conference losses to New York University, in Ridgefield Park, on Thursday evening. The Violets were the official home team for both ends of the double-header. Yeshiva lost game one, 13-3. In the second game, the Maccabees rallied with four runs in the sixth to cut NYU's lead to one run, but fell short, 7-4.
In the opening game, NYU scored three runs in each of the first two innings and never looked back. In the top of the fifth, Yeshiva got on the board as sophomore right fielder
Josh Fogel produced a single and advanced to second on an NYU fielding error at third base, which allowed freshman second baseman
Mordy Kirsch to score from second.
In the top of the sixth, junior starting pitcher
Mordechai Cohen led off with a single through the left side. Freshman catcher
Max Goldstein followed up with a double to left, advancing Cohen to third. Both runners would end up scoring thanks to junior left fielder
Aryeh Salovey reaching base on an error. Salovey was credited with one run batted in on the play.
That would be all the scoring for the Macs as the Violets went on to win the opening game, 13-3.
For the contest, senior center fielder
Elan Paul, Cohen, Goldstein, and Salovey each drew a walk. On the mound, Cohen struck out two batters but took the loss.
In game two, NYU (21-13) scored four runs in the opening frame to take a commanding lead. Yeshiva (2-23) entered the sixth down by five runs, but would not go down without a fight. Kirsch led off the inning with a walk. Paul was awarded first after being hit by a pitch. Both runners successfully executed a double-steal to set the Maccabees up with runners on second and third, nobody out.
Junior shortstop
Shmuli Goldis reached base thanks to a fielding error at first, but he picked up an RBI as Kirsch scored to put YU on the board. During Cohen's at-bat, Paul successfully stole home for Yeshiva's second run of the game. After Goldis advanced to second on a wild pitch, Cohen walked. The two runners executed a double-steal to keep the Violets honest.
Junior first baseman
Eli Lipner and Goldstein combined for back-to-back RBI singles to score Goldis and Cohen respectively, and narrowed NYU's lead to just one run, at 5-4, with runners on first and second, nobody out. However, Yeshiva could not get the tying run to home plate and NYU was able to get out of its jam with the lead intact.
The Violets scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning, and went on to win the game, 7-4.
For the game, Cohen had two walks. Fogel worked a walk of his own. On the mound, senior pitcher
Rephael Rosenberg struck out eight batters and pitched a complete game in the final game of his collegiate career.
The Maccabees will return to the diamond in 2018.
