Women's Basketball Can't Overcome Slow Start Against Merchant Marine

KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team suffered a Skyline Conference loss to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 61-30, at Liebertz Gym on Tuesday evening. Yeshiva falls to 2-9 in Skyline play (4-13 overall), while Merchant Marine advances to 10-3 in conference games (14-5 overall).

The Mariners scored 23 unanswered points, spanning from the opening minute of the first quarter to the early stages of the second, to take a commanding 25-2 advantage. The Maccabees could not get back into the contest.

However, Yeshiva was able to settle in defensively, holding Merchant Marine to without a field goal for 8:28 in the second half. Yeshiva scored the first 10 points of the fourth quarter, highlighted by two layups from freshman forward Celia Cohen. The Maccabees outscored the Mariners, 12-6, in the final frame but it was not enough, as the Mariners went on to earn the Skyline win.

For the evening, senior forward Michal Alge grabbed a team-high 15 rebounds to go along with four points, two blocks, and one steal. Junior forward Nicole Bick led the team in scoring with 10 points, while grabbing four rebounds. Cohen just missed a double-double with nine points and just as many rebounds, while distributing two assists and blocking two shots. Sophomore guard Laura Betesh scored four points and forced two steals, while freshman guard Leah Shulman scored two points with three boards. Freshman forward Lindsay Brandwein produced a point with three rebounds. Classmate Chana Boltax brought down two caroms, while senior forward Chavi Charlap had a rebound of her own. Freshman guard Adina Rosenberg had an assist.

For the Mariners, Kaeigh Darcy produced a double-double with 19 points and 18 rebounds, both game-highs. She also distributed five assists, forced three steals, and blocked two shots. Tichina Carmon added 12 points with eight boards, while Shelby Peters produced eight points with 10 caroms. Gabrielle Salazar had eight points with five assists. 

Yeshiva will be back in action on Thursday, for a Skyline Conference contest at St. Joseph's Brooklyn. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
