BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's soccer team suffered a hard-fought loss to York College (N.Y.), 3-0, at the Aviator Sports and Events Center on Sunday evening. The Cardinals advance to 2-13-1, while the Maccabees drop to 0-12-0.
Both teams exchanged chances in the early stages of the match, but York finally capitalized in the 34
th minute. Taylor Bellmon entered the box and shot the ball, but it was stopped by junior goalkeeper
Gabriella Chutter. However, Bellmon grabbed her own rebound and tipped the ball into the net to put York up, 1-0.
With less than two minutes remaining in the opening half, Diana Velasquez had a breakaway opportunity, but her point-blank shot was denied by Chutter. The period ended with the Cardinals up, 1-0.
In the 49
th minute, Velasquez was brought down inside the box. She successfully converted the penalty kick to extend the visiting team's lead to two goals.
With just over 20 minutes remaining in regulation time, Velasquez received a through pass from Michelle Rodriguez and rifled the ball past Chutter for her second tally of the match. York went on to earn the non-conference win, 3-0.
For the Maccabees, Chutter made eight saves. Sophomore defender
Sarah Berger had two shots on goal, while classmate
Chana Boltax registered a pair of shots. Sophomore midfielder
Rachel Kahen produced a shot of her own. For York, Stephanie Gutierrez made two saves to earn the shutout victory.
Yeshiva will return to action, on Thursday afternoon, for a Skyline match against Mount Saint Vincent. The contest will take place at Alumni Field, in Newark, N.J., beginning at 4:00 p.m.
