Men's Soccer Rallies But Falls to Berkeley (N.Y.) in Overtime

TEANECK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team concluded the 2018 season by dropping a hard-fought match to Berkeley College (N.Y.), 3-2 in overtime, at Votee Park on Sunday evening.

The Maccabees (7-8) trailed by a pair of goals, after 68 minutes of play, but rallied to tie the match before the end of regulation. The Knights (11-5-1) recovered to win in overtime, thanks to a goal by Omario Rosen, with 45 seconds remaining.

Neither team could find the back of the net during the first 45 minutes of play. Berkeley had quality chances during the 33rd minute, but Carlos Veliz's shot was denied by freshman goalkeeper Edgar Schottland. The Maccabees were not out of the woods yet, as Marcus Leon gathered the rebound and drilled the ball towards the net, but Schottland once again made the key save to keep the match scoreless.

The Knights would cash in just five minutes into the second period, as Jean-Gardy Derineau scored on a breakaway off a through pass from Amadou Sy. The visiting team would strike again in the 67th minute. Schottland turned aside a shot, but Jovani Guzman collected the rebound and tipped the ball into the net to extend Berkeley's lead to two goals. Veliz was credited with the assist.

Yeshiva would strike back less than two minutes later. Freshman forward Joseph Aron dribbled the ball down the field and shot the ball past the goalkeeper, from inside the box, to cut YU's deficit in half.

The Maccabees had a golden opportunity to even the match in the 78th minute, but senior defender Juan Cotton's shot, off a free kick, hit the post. Aron had an opportunity of his own, with less than three minutes remaining in regulation time, but his shot was blocked by the Knights' defense. Aron recovered the ball but shot it high.

With just over one minute to play in the second half, senior defender Joseph Grobman recovered the ball off a scramble inside the box and propelled it into the back of the net to tie the match. It was the captain's first goal of the season. The contest was even at two goals apiece, after 90 minutes of play, so overtime was needed.

Just under two minutes into the extra session, Cotton was pulled down inside the box to earn a penalty kick. On the P.K. opportunity, Cotton shot the ball into the arms of Dario Cruz-Sepulveda. When live play continued, Cotton produced a point-blank shot that was once again denied by Cruz-Sepulveda.

With 45 seconds left to play in the first overtime period, Rosen headed the ball into the net, off a feed by Matthew Perreira, for the game-winner.

For the evening, Berkeley had the advantage in shots, 23-14, and in corner kicks, 4-2. Schottland made 10 saves, while Cruz-Sepulveda turned aside five shots to earn the win.

Prior to the match, the men's soccer team paid tribute to the 11 victims who tragically lost their lives during the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting in Pittsburgh. All 11 starters wore t-shirts with the name and age of each victim.

The Maccabees will return to the field in 2019.
