NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team dropped its non-conference matchup to the City College of New York, 3-0, at the Max Stern Athletic Center on Thursday evening. Set scores were 25-12, 25-11, and 25-12.
After falling behind 4-0 in the opening set, a kill by junior outside hitter
Amitai Miller highlighted five unanswered points by the Maccabees (0-3), to put the home team in front. The Beavers (6-0) countered with a 7-0 run of their own to regain the lead. Yeshiva would not go down without a fight, as a kill by junior outside hitter
Chaim Aryeh Rubin sparked a 3-0 for YU, narrowing CCNY's lead to 11-8. However, City College was able to shift momentum back into its favor by finishing the set with a 14-4 run to take the first game, 25-12, and go up 1-0 in the match.
The Beavers' momentum would carry into the second stanza, as the visiting team jumped out to a commanding 8-0 lead. A kill by sophomore setter
Derek Orenshein and a service ace by Miller put the Macs on the board. Yeshiva could not sustain another consistent run, however, as CCNY was able to build its lead and win the second game, 25-11, putting Yeshiva on the brink.
In the third set, a kill by sophomore middle blocker
Yosef Ajami tied it up, 2-2. From that point on, CCNY took complete control by scoring 23 of the set's final 33 points to clinch the game, 25-12, and the match, 3-0.
For the evening, Rubin had a team-high four kills with three digs, an assist, and a block. Miller produced two kills, a dig, and an assist, while freshman outside hitter
Joseph Sulaymanov anchored the defense with five digs and produced a kill on the attack. Senior opposite hitter
Isaac Pomerance led the team with five assists and added two digs on the defensive end. Ajami and Orenshein each had a kill and two digs, with the latter producing an assist and a block. Freshman right side hitter
Juan Diego Cordova and freshman setter
Ariel Boutehsaz each contributed on defense with a dig.
For the Beavers, Carlos Maldonado Madrid slammed home a match-high 16 kills, with six digs, and four service aces.
Yeshiva will return to the Max Stern Athletic Center on Sunday, for a non-conference matchup against Culinary Institute of America. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
