NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team concluded the 2017-18 season with a hard-fought loss to Purchase College, 67-51, at Nat Holman Gymnasium on Saturday evening.
It was a special night as graduating seniors
Chavi Charlap and
Shira Feen were honored on their senior night with a ceremony prior to the start of the game. They each had strong performances as Charlap grabbed a career-high four rebounds and dished out an assist, while Feen scored a long two-point field goal, just in front of the three-point line.
History also occurred as third-year forward
Michal Alge grabbed her 900
th career rebound in the closing minutes of the contest. For the evening, she scored 16 points with a career-high 25 rebounds, while dishing out four assists, forcing two steals, and blocking one shot. Alge's 25
th rebound of the contest was the 900
th of her career, as she grabbed the milestone carom with 2:48 remaining in the game. Less than a minute later, she subbed out of the contest to a standing ovation.
The Maccabees (4-21, 2-16 Skyline) kept up with the Panthers (11-14, 7-11 Skyline) early in the game, as a layup by junior guard
Nicole Bick tied it up, 15-15, with 1:25 left to play in the opening quarter. After trailing by three entering the second period, Bick and Alge combined for back-to-back layups to give YU a one-point lead, at 19-18, just 30 seconds in.
Later in the stanza, junior forward
Celia Cohen converted a layup of her own to help Yeshiva regain the lead, at 23-22. From that point on, Purchase took complete control of the game by scoring 11 unanswered points to take a 32-23 advantage with 4:29 left to play in the half. Both teams went into the locker rooms with the score 39-27 in favor of the Panthers.
The Maccabees could not sustain a consistent run in the second half to get back into the game, as Purchase closed out the season with the win.
For the evening, Bick tied a team-high with 16 points and brought down three boards. Freshman guard
Chana Boltax added seven points with two rebounds, while junior guard
Laura Betesh added four points with three boards. Cohen produced six points with just as many rebounds. Freshman forward
Lindsay Brandwein and junior guard
Penny Rabin each produced four rebounds, with the former distributing a pair of assists. Freshman forward
Kaley Baker brought down a rebound of her own.
The Yeshiva University women's basketball team will compete again in November 2018.
