PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped both ends of its Skyline Conference double-header to Purchase College, at the Purchase College baseball field, on Tuesday evening. Yeshiva lost game one, 28-1, while falling in the second contest by a score of 14-2. The Maccabees were the official home team for both ends of the twin-bill.
In the opening game, Purchase (10-4, 2-0 Skyline) scored nine runs in the first three innings and never looked back. Yeshiva's (0-8, 0-6 Skyline) lone run came in the bottom of the sixth, thanks to an RBI double by senior first baseman
Chaim Nosson Rosenberg, which scored sophomore center fielder
David Hanelin from second.
For the game, Jonathan Deacon picked up the win for the Panthers on the mound, pitching five shutout innings. Neal Koch gave up no earned runs in two innings of relief. At the plate, Nick Tuozzola produced a two-run inside-the-park home run.
For the Maccabees, Rosenberg went 2-for-3, while freshman catcher
Simon Schoen, senior designated hitter
Mordechai Cohen, and sophomore shortstop
Zachary Baly each went 1-for-2. Hanelin stole a base. On the mound, freshman pitcher
Yosef Rosenfield started and went five-plus innings, but was credited with the loss.
In the second game, the Panthers took a 4-0 lead after an inning and a half. Yeshiva loaded the bases in the home half of the second. Junior right fielder
Josh Fogel was hit by a pitch to score Cohen, putting the Macs on the board. That would be all Yeshiva would get in the frame.
After junior left fielder
Aryeh Salovey tripled to right field in the bottom of the fourth, Fogel picked up his second run batted in of the game by grounding the ball to second base, scoring Salovey and narrowing the Panthers' lead to 7-2.
Purchase would score seven runs in the top of the seventh to extend its lead, and went on to win by a score of 14-2.
For the game, Cohen drilled a double and scored a run, while Goldis produced a single. Hanelin picked up his second stolen base of the evening, while also drawing a walk. Rosenberg and Baly each reached base via a walk.
On the mound, Cohen started and went six-plus innings to take the loss, striking out two Panther batters in the process. Brian Cunningham started and picked up the win for Purchase, racking up four strikeouts in five innings pitched. Cody Hennequin struck out five Yeshiva batters in two shutout innings of relief.
Yeshiva will play the College of New Rochelle, in a non-conference double-header, on Friday. First pitch of the opening game at Preller-Padavan Fields is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
