PALISADES PARK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University baseball team earned its first victory of the season, defeating Vaughn College by a score of 13-8, at Palisades Park on Monday evening.
Marty Craft picks up his first victory as a collegiate head coach.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first, Yeshiva (1-10) scored twice in the bottom frame, and added seven runs in the home half of the third, to take a commanding lead.
In the bottom of the first, sophomore designated hitter
Sonny Braha drew a one out walk that would seemingly load the bases. However, senior shortstop
Shmuli Goldis was able to steal home immediately after Vaughn's (0-1) catcher was caught off-guard. That would tie the game, 1-1. An error in the infield allowed senior first baseman
Chaim Nosson Rosenberg to score to give the Maccabees a 2-1 advantage.
After the Warriors tied the game in the top of the second, a two-run triple by sophomore catcher
Jordan Shafron allowed YU to jump out to a 4-2 lead. Later in the frame with the bases loaded, and one out, Goldis launched a single to right to clear the bases. The team captain ended up scoring on an error in right field to give the Maccabees a commanding 8-2 lead.
Goldis would strike again in the next inning, launching a double to left field to drive in two more runs for the Macs, extending their advantage to 10-2. Earlier in the frame, senior left fielder
Mordechai Cohen produced an RBI single, scoring Rosenberg.
The Warriors rallied with five runs in the fifth, but it was not enough as the Maccabees went on to earn the win, 13-8.
Leading the way for Yeshiva was Goldis, who went 2-for-2 with three runs, three RBI, a stolen base, and two walks. Rosenberg also scored three runs with two walks and a stolen base. Junior third baseman
Alex Malech scored two runs, drew a pair of walks, and had just as many stolen bases.
Junior left fielder
Aryeh Salovey scored two runs, while reaching base twice via the walk. Braha and Cohen each earned a walk, with the latter stealing a base. Sophomore center fielder
David Hanelin scored a run on two walks and a stolen base, while first-year second baseman
Zachary Baly scored a run on a pair of walks and a stolen base. Shafron crossed home plate once.
On the mound, Salovey earned the win by pitching two shutout innings in relief. Sophomore pitcher
Shmuel Silverstein pitched two innings, giving up one earned run, one hit, and striking out three Vaughn batters. Patrick Silva Da Cruz took the loss on the mound for Vaughn.
Yeshiva will be back in action on Wednesday, for a non-conference double-header against Valley Forge University, at Silver Lake Park. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
