JAMAICA, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team concluded the 2018 season with a pair of non-conference losses to the College of New Rochelle, 15-2 and 11-7, at Padavan-Preller Fields on Sunday afternoon.
It was an historic afternoon for the Maccabees (4-25) as senior shortstop
Shmuli Goldis produced the 100
th hit of his illustrious four-year career, the first in program history to accomplish this feat. He earned the milestone hit by lining an RBI single to right field, in the top of the fourth of game two, to score junior left fielder
Aryeh Salovey. Goldis came into the doubleheader three hits shy of the 100-hit plateau, but went 3-for-6 during the two games to reach historic status.
"It's an honor to have been able to realize this achievment in a Macs uniform," Goldis said. However, none of this would have been possible without the care, guidence, and direction of my coaches, teammates, and the entire athletic department of YU as a whole, so I would like to everyone that helped make this milestone happen."
Goldis concludes his career with a program-best .356 batting average. Not only did he set a career program record for hits, he set a school single-season record with a batting average of .400 in 2016. That year, the Hollywood, Fla. resident produced a program single-season record of 30 hits.
"From a personal perspective, it's always nice to see the thousands of hours of hard work and practice come to a head with such a milestone like this," Goldis said. " I hope this can influence any player who may question putting in the extra work, to take those few extra swings, or to take those few extra reps. As a graduating senior, I want to say that it has been an honor to put on the Macs uniform for four years and compete for this amazing school. Go Macs!"
In the opening game, the Blue Angels (12-28) scored six runs in the first, produced one run in the second, and added a half dozen more runs in the third to take a commanding 13-0 lead. Rocky Gonzalez and Albert Rodriguez drilled back-to-back homers to highlight the big third inning, with the former's blast a three-run shot.
In the top of the fifth, with a runner on second and two outs, Goldis hustled to earn an infield single for his 99
th career hit. First-year catcher
Simon Schoen ended up scoring on the play, thanks to a throwing error, to put the Maccabees on the board. Goldis collected his 98
th career hit back in the first, on a single to left field.
In the top of the sixth, senior first baseman
Chaim Nosson Rosenberg lined the ball over the left field fence for his second home run of his career, just one round-tripper shy of tying the program-record.
It would not be enough, as New Rochelle went on to win the opening game.
For the contest, Schoen produced a single, while sophomore second baseman
Zachary Baly and first-year pitcher
Shmuel Silverstein each drew a walk. Malik Dixon earned a complete-game victory on the mound for the Blue Angels, while sophomore pitcher
Sonny Braha started the game and took the loss.
Yeshiva got off to a quick start in game two, by scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first. Salovey scored the first run on a throwing error. Sophomore center fielder
David Hanelin picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Goldis to extend Yeshiva's lead to 2-0.
After slicing the deficit in half during the bottom frame, CNR's lineup broke out with eight runs in the second, highlighted by a two-run homer off the bat of Edgardo Figueroa, to take a commanding 9-2 lead.
After Yeshiva scored one run in the third, Goldis' historic hit pulled YU to within six, in the top half of the fourth. Hanelin led off the fifth with a triple to right center field, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Baly to narrow New Rochelle's lead to 10-5.
Hanelin would strike again in the top of the seventh, lining an RBI single to score sophomore third baseman
Alex Malech to shrink CNR's lead to 11-6. Two batters later, he would score thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore catcher
Jordan Shafron to pull YU to within four, at 11-7. That would be the final score.
For the game, Hanelin went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and drove in just as many. Rosenberg went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, while Goldis stole a pair of bases to go along with his 100
th career hit. Malech produced a single, drew a walk, and scored twice. Baly had a single and a run batted in, while Shafron also picked up an RBI. Silverstein reached base with a single, while Salovey produced a one-base hit, scored twice, and produced a base-on-balls.
On the mound, Alex Erwin earned the win, while junior pitcher
Mordechai Cohen took the loss. Steven Dominguez did not give up an earned run in three innings out of the bullpen. Malech pitched a one-two-three sixth inning in relief.
Congratulations to Goldis and Rosenberg, who played in the final two collegiate baseball games of their careers.
The Yeshiva University baseball team will return to action in 2019.
