TEANECK, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team earned an impressive victory in its Skyline opener over Sarah Lawrence College, 6-1, at Votee Park on Friday afternoon. The Maccabees (3-2, 1-0 Skyline) scored five goals in the second half to earn the key conference victory.
Four of those five goals were scored by freshman forward
Jonah Beberman. The rookie phenom scored three goals in a span of 2:58, which is the ninth fastest hat trick in NCAA Division III history. The quickest hat trick was produced by Mike Pepe of Ohio Wesleyan, who scored three goals in 1:09 back in October of 1992. Beberman does set a school record that was previously held by
Itamar Ben David ('17), who produced a hat trick in 4:38 against St. Joseph's Brooklyn in October of 2015.
"Today's win was great," Yeshiva University head coach
J.J. Davidson said. "Everyone is excited by the way we played and rightfully so. This was one of the biggest conference wins in the school's history, but we must stay grounded and continue working hard."
Yeshiva struck first during the match, as senior midfielder
Dan Cohen lined a pass to sophomore forward
Zachary Stauber, who entered deep into the box and tipped the ball past the goalkeeper for the first goal of the contest.
Sarah Lawrence (0-5, 0-1 Skyline) countered in the 45
th minute, as Mohamed Camara benefited from a scramble inside the box by collecting a rebound off a blocked shot and drilling the ball into the wide-open net, to even the match at one goal apiece. That would be the score at the intermission
Beberman took over in the second half by scoring three consecutive goals in a span of 2:58. His first goal, the game-winner, occurred in the 55
th minute as he received a lob pass from freshman midfielder
Marc Ziarno and beat the goalkeeper, one-on-one, to break the tie. His next goal occurred just 34 second later, as Cohen guided the ball through a sea of opposing defenders and connected with Beberman, who tipped the ball into the net to extend YU's lead to two goals. By scoring a pair of goals 34 seconds apart, Beberman is now tied for 21
st overall on the NCAA Division III All-Time list. His third goal of the match came in the 58
th minute as he collected the ball off a deflection and shot it into the net from just outside the box, increasing Yeshiva's lead to 4-1.
The Maccabees added insurance in the 68
th minute, as Ziarno headed the ball into the cage off a corner kick that was executed by Cohen, which put the Gryphons behind by four goals. Beberman registered his fourth goal of the afternoon, and fifth of the season, as he tipped the ball into the back of the net from inside the box. Sophomore forward
Alberto Benhamu was credited with the assist. Yeshiva went on to earn the Skyline win, 6-1.
For the match, Cohen had three assists. Yeshiva had the slight edge in shots, 20-18, as well as a narrow advantage in corner kicks, 7-6. Freshman goalkeeper
Edgar Schottland made seven saves to pick up the victory in goal. His counterpart, Matteo Romano stopped just as many shots.
Yeshiva will take on St. Joseph's Long Island, in a key Skyline Conference match, at Danzi Stadium on Sunday. The contest is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
