BRONX, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's golf team opened up the 2018 fall season with a 4-1 loss to Manhattanville College, in match-play at the Pelham Bay Golf Course, on Sunday afternoon. The Maccabees start the season 0-1, while the Valiants advance to 1-0.
Leading the way for the Maccabees was junior
Alex Malech, who was victorious over Mike Balfe, 4 & 3. Malech scored a 77 and clinched his match by birdying the 15
th hole. He also had a birdie on the fifth hole. "Alex really was great today," Yeshiva University head coach
Jason Eisenman said. "He came into the season firing on all cylinders."
Sophomore
Daniel Spirgel made his collegiate debut, and shot an 82, the same score as his opponent, Rob Andrews. However, Andrews earned the "two-up" victory because he was up two holes with just one more left to play.
Junior
Jonathan Pomper also made his collegiate debut, shooting an impressive 82. Pomper fell short to Reid Robertson, 5 & 3.
"I'm very proud of the guys today and how they played," Eisenman said. "We were without three of our starting five. It shows me a lot about the depth of this team."
Yeshiva will return to the Pelham Bay Golf Course on Sunday, September 16, for a Skyline match against Purchase College. Tee time is 12:00 p.m.
