Men's Soccer Overwhelms CCNY in Season Finale

TEANECK, N.J. — The Yeshiva University men's soccer team defeated The City College of New York by a score of 6-1 at Votee Park on Sunday night. The Macs (4-10-1, 1-9-1 Skyline) ended their 2019 season on a high note, as five different players scored for the Blue and White. YU concludes the season by winning its last two matches.

"The boys played outstanding soccer tonight," Yeshiva University head coach J.J. Davidson said. "The team defended well when needed and some of the combination plays were simply a pleasure to watch."

Yeshiva broke the scoreless match 25 minutes in, as a penalty shot by junior defenseman Simon Schoen found the back of the net, the first goal of his career. After having multiple shots on goal turned aside, the Macs struck again in the 33rd minute, when sophomore midfielder Marc Ziarno located classmate forward Ethan Fettaya on a breakaway, who slipped a shot past the goalkeeper for his first goal of the season. Yeshiva went into halftime with that 2-0 lead.

A shot on goal by junior forward Zachary Stauber in the 63rd minute was stopped by the Beavers goalkeeper, but Fettaya was there to chip in his second goal of the night off the rebound, extending the Macs lead to 3-0. CCNY (3-13, 3-4 CUNYAC) responded by cutting that deficit to two in the 70th minute of the match, firing off a kick from 20 yards out. Yeshiva added to their total, eight minutes later, as Stauber drove a breakaway downfield and beat the keeper one-on-one. Less than 30 seconds after, freshman midfielder Jess Rom contributed to the offensive attack with a tally of his own, scoring off a free kick. Junior forward Isaac Bendahan supplied another score in the 89th minute, the sixth goal of the game for the Macs, their first time doing so since September 14, 2018, against Sarah Lawrence College.

For the game, Yeshiva had the edge in shots, with 22 (13 on goal), while CCNY had 14 (five on goal). The Beavers had the advantage in corner kicks, however, with four compared to the Macs' two. Fettaya led the offensive attack with two goals and one assist. Bendahan and Stauber each had four shots on goal, with the latter also serving up an assist. Rom, Ziarno, and sophomore forward David Shrem each added assists to their performances. In goal, junior goalkeeper Sagi Badash stopped two shots, while teammate Nicolas Dlugach restricted one in relief.

"We showed tonight what we are capable of when we are at our best and we will remember that as we prepare for 2020," Davidson said.
