NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team opened the 2019-20 season in grand fashion, knocking off The King's College N.Y. by a score of 72-44 at the ARC Arena, on Sunday evening.
Leading the way for Yeshiva (1-0) was senior forward
Tehilla Teigman, who produced a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The Houston native shot 9-for-12 from the field. First-year guard
Jessie Orgel tallied 14 points with three boards. Freshman guard
Yuval Nitzan had a solid game with eight points, just as many assists, four rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Senior forward
Lindsay Brandwein just missed a double-double with eight points and 13 rebounds, while blocking three shots and collecting a pair of steals. Classmate
Adina Rosenberg brought down seven caroms.
The Maccabees got off to a slow start, as the Lions (0-1) jumped out to a quick 5-0 advantage. Yeshiva later trailed, 10-6, but finished the first quarter strong by outscoring King's, 12-4, in the final 2:28 to take the lead, 18-14, after 10 minutes of play. Brandwein began the run with a layup and then Orgel capped it off with a 3-point field goal with 25 seconds remaining.
After the visiting team pulled to within two in the second quarter, Yeshiva scored 16 unanswered points to take a commanding 36-18 hold and never looked back. Teigman scored six points during the run. Nitzan and sophomore guard
Elisheva Mirwis produced back-to-back 3-point baskets to give YU the 18-point lead with 5:11 remaining in the half. The Macs went into the locker rooms up, 41-22.
King's outscored Yeshiva, 20-13, in the third quarter. However, YU bounced back in the fourth by holding the opposition to just two points. The Macs scored 18 during the final frame on their way to the season-opening win.
For the evening, the Maccabees scored 17 points off turnovers.
Yeshiva will return to the ARC Arena on Tuesday, for a non-conference matchup against Baruch College, beginning at 8:00 p.m. The Maccabees will serve as the official home team.
