Men's Volleyball Drops Match to City College

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team capped off its season-opening five-match road trip with a loss to the City College of New York, 3-0, at Nat Holman Gymnasium on Thursday evening. Set scores were 25-15, 25-12, and 25-20.

The Beavers (6-4) never trailed in the opening set. The home team went on a 15-4 run to take a commanding 19-4 advantage and put the game out of reach for the Maccabees (1-4).

In the second set, Yeshiva took advantage of three consecutive attack errors from CCNY to tie the match, 6-6. However, the Beavers took control of the game by scoring 16 consecutive points to put YU in a 22-6 hole. Sophomore outside hitter Joseph Sulaymanov scored two service aces to propel the Macs to a 6-0 run to pull to within 10. However, City College scored the stanza's last three points to clinch the set and put Yeshiva on the brink.

After falling behind, 19-12, Sulaymanov slammed home two kills during Yeshiva's stretch of five straight points that narrowed the opposition's lead to 19-17. Yeshiva managed to shrink the deficit to 20-19, but City College responded with a 5-1 run to clinch the set and the match.

For the evening, senior outside hitter Chaim Aryeh Rubin, sophomore opposite hitter Derek Orenshein, and senior libero Sibi Selvarajah led the way defensively with six digs each. Sophomore setter Isaac Pomerance produced a team-high nine assists to go along with three kills and just as many digs. Graduate middle blocker Adam Gerszberg produced a pair of kills, while junior middle blocker Yosef Ajami had a kill of his own. Sophomore defensive specialist Eliyahou Benhamou had a solid match defensively with a dig and a block.

For CCNY, freshman right side hitter Xhulio Myftari had 13 kills and 11 service aces, while scoring 25 points. Junior libero Jonathan Liao produced eight digs.
