HYDE PARK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team earned a convincing non-conference victory over host Culinary Institute of America, in straight sets, on Sunday afternoon. Set scores were 25-11, 25-17, and 25-13.
The Maccabees (2-6) generated a hitting percentage of .259 and never trailed at any point in the match.
Leading the way for Yeshiva was sophomore middle blocker
Eliyahou Benhamou, who slammed home seven kills and led all players with 9.5 points. Senior outside hitter
Chaim Aryeh Rubin scored four service aces to go along with two kills. Sophomore outside hitter
Joseph Sulaymanov and graduate middle blocker
Adam Gerszberg each produced four kills, with the latter scoring three aces. Sophomore setter
Isaac Pomerance led all players with 19 assists and added six digs on defense.
In the opening set, second-year opposite hitter
Derek Orenshein began and ended a 7-0 run by the Maccabees, with a kill, to give the visiting team a commanding 12-2 hold. The deficit would be too much to overcome for CIA (0-1) as YU scored the game's final three points to earn the convincing set-victory, 25-11.
Culinary narrowed Yeshiva's hold to 19-16 in the second set. However, Yeshiva pulled away by scoring six of the set's last seven points to go up 2-0 in the match and put the home team on the brink. Junior middle blocker
Yosef Ajami started the rally with a kill and Orenshein's successful attack clinched the set for Yeshiva, 25-17.
Yeshiva got off to another strong start in the third stanza, as Sulaymanov and Benhamou combined for back-to-back kills to give the Macs an 11-4 advantage. A service ace by Sulaymanov gave Yeshiva a commanding 15-6 lead. Later in the set, Benhamou produced an ace of his own to extend the Blue and White's lead to 18-7. The Steels could not get back into the set as Sulaymanov slammed home a kill to secure the sweep for Yeshiva.
For the evening, Ajami produced five kills, while Orenshein added three digs on the defensive end. Sophomore outside hitter
Jonathan Apsan had two kills, while freshman libero
Michael Stark anchored the defense with four digs. Junior setter
