Softball Can't Keep Game Two Lead as Lehman Earns Sweep

BRONX, N.Y – The Yeshiva University softball team dropped both ends of its non-conference doubleheader to Lehman College, by scores of 12-0 and 19-6, at the South Field on Tuesday evening. The Lightning advance to 3-9, while the Maccabees drop to 0-10.

Yeshiva was held to three hits in the opening game.

The Lightning came storming out of the gates with seven runs scored in the first inning, and never looked back. The big blow in the frame came off the bat of freshman left fielder Anjolie Alexander, who singled to right field to score two runs. In the bottom of the third, sophomore first baseman Tiffany Adames drove in two runs on a single that put Lehman up, 12-0.

For the game, senior pitcher Diamond Villegas earned a complete game victory in the circle, striking out 11 YU batters, while senior pitcher Samantha Cohen took the loss. Second-year left fielder Basya Goldstein, senior center fielder Leah Feder, and sophomore designated player Malky Perlberger each reached base with a single.

In game two, sophomore pitcher Chana Boltax doubled to right center, scoring Goldstein from second, to give Yeshiva a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Two batters later, junior first baseman Gabi Chutter drove Boltax in on a double to left center field to extend YU's lead to two runs. In the bottom frame, a two-run single off the bat of Adames and an RBI one-bagger by Alexander propelled the Lightning to a 3-2 lead.

The Macs loaded the bases with one out in the second. Goldstein singled through the left side to score Feder, tying the game at three runs apiece. Boltax was up next and was hit by a pitch, allowing Perlberger to score and give the Maccabees a 4-3 advantage. The Lightning once again countered in the bottom frame, as a two-run single by junior third baseman Caitlin Vernon was part of a three-run 2nd inning, as Yeshiva fell behind by two runs.

With the bases loaded and one out, in the top of the third, sophomore third baseman Chana Weinberg crushed the ball over the center fielder's head to drive in two runs and tie the game, 6-6. From that point on, Lehman took complete control of the game with seven runs in the bottom of the third, and six more in the fourth, on its way to a 19-6 win. The big blow came from a three-run home run to right by Adames, in the fourth, to cap off the scoring for Lehman.

For the game, Goldstein went 2-for-3, while Feder scored a pair of runs. Senior right fielder Sarah Elspas produced a single and scored a run. Feder had a single and drew a walk, while Weinberg earned a base on balls. Perlberger added two more hits.

In the circle, Adames earned her first victory of the season, while Boltax took the loss. Adames drove in five runs and scored three times, while Alexander went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

Yeshiva will return to Skyline play with a doubleheader at the College at Old Westbury, on Friday morning, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
