FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team suffered a pair of Skyline Conference losses to Farmingdale State College, by scores of 18-3 and 16-0, at the Farmingdale State Softball Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
In the opening game, the Rams (6-12, 6-0 Skyline) scored three runs in the first, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of junior first baseman Jessica Lombardo, to put the Maccabees (0-14, 0-8 Skyline) in an early hole.
Yeshiva countered with three runs in the next half-inning to tie the game. In YU's productive frame, the Macs loaded the bases with nobody out. Senior center fielder
Sarah Elspas and third-year pitcher
Samantha Cohen combined for back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to narrow FSC's lead to one run. Sophomore second baseman
Chana Boltax reached on a fielder's choice for an RBI, scoring Elspas, and evening the game at three runs apiece.
Farmingdale's lineup could not be contained, as the home team scored five runs in the third and put up a 10-spot in the fourth. During the fourth inning, senior third baseman Sierra Cardenales came up with all the bases occupied. She drove in three runs with a double. Later in the frame, freshman shortstop Jessica Clark hit a grand slam to cap off the scoring for Farmingdale. That put the game out of reach for the Maccabees, as the Rams went on to earn the convincing game one victory.
For the Rams, Lombardo went 3-for-4 with five RBI and three runs scored. Cardenales drove in four runs of her own. In the circle, junior pitcher Julia Walpole struck out seven YU batters to earn the complete-game victory.
For Yeshiva, sophomore first baseman
Noa Applebaum drew two walks, scored a run, and produced a single. Cohen slapped a one-base hit, while senior catcher Hiller earned a base on balls. Boltax and senior right fielder
Leah Feder singled with the latter scoring a run. In the circle, Cohen took the loss.
In game two, senior Jaxie Collard and sophomore Alexa Clauge combined to no-hit the Maccabees. Sophomore shortstop
Miriam Kazlow drew a walk in the top of the fifth. After advancing to third, later in the inning, she tried to steal home but was thrown out to end the game.
Collard threw four perfect innings to earn the win, while Clauge retired Yeshiva in the fifth.
Farmingdale's lineup scored five runs in the first, eight in the second, and three in the third to clinch the sweep. Sophomore designated player Madeleine Smith went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI single, a walk, and crossed home plate twice. Freshman right fielder Sabrina Snyder scored three runs and drove in just as many, while sophomore third baseman Kayla Nunez went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in and two runs scored. In the circle, Boltax started the game and took the loss.
Yeshiva will return to the friendly confines of Bahoshy field on Tuesday, for a non-conference doubleheader against Brooklyn College, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
