No. 4 Men's Volleyball Concludes Season With Skyline Semifinal Loss to No. 1 St. Joseph's Long Island

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team's 2019 season came to an end on Thursday, as the No. 4 Maccabees dropped its Skyline Conference Semifinal match to the No. 1 Golden Eagles of St. Joseph's College Long Island, in straight sets at the Danzi Center, on Thursday evening. Set scores were 25-4, 25-13, and 25-8.

St. Joseph's Long Island (24-6) will host Purchase College in the Skyline Championship match on Saturday. The Golden Eagles will look to win its second straight conference title and automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

It was a successful season for Yeshiva, as the Maccabees picked up eight wins (8-11), four in the conference, and earned their second straight appearance in the Skyline Conference Championships.

For the Maccabees, senior outside hitter Chaim Aryeh Rubin slammed home two kills and anchored the defense with three digs. Sophomore setter Isaac Pomerance chipped in with eight assists. Graduate middle blocker Adam Gerszberg produced three kills, while sophomore outside hitter Jonathan Apsan had two successful attacks. Junior middle blocker Yosef Ajami chipped in on defense with two digs, had just as many kills on the attack, and registered an assist. Sophomore outside hitter Joseph Sulaymanov had two kills and a dig, while graduate libero Sibi Selvarajah and freshman defensive specialist Michael Stark each recorded a dig of their own.

The Golden Eagles did not trail at any point in the match. After dropping the first set, Yeshiva improved in the second as a kill by Apsan narrowed YU's deficit to 20-10. Later in the set, the Golden Eagles scored the final three points to go up 2-0 in the match and put Yeshiva on the brink. In the third set, Sulaymanov slammed home a kill to narrow the home team's lead to 23-8, but St. Joseph's scored the final two points to clinch its second straight appearance in the Skyline Championship match.

The men's volleyball team will return to action in February of 2020.
