Baseball Drops Two Skyline Games to Maritime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team dropped a pair of Skyline games to Maritime College, by scores of 12-2 and 11-2, at Reinhart Field on Sunday afternoon. The Privateers pad their record to 19-13 overall (10-4 Skyline), while the Maccabees fall to 2-25 for the season (0-18 Skyline).

The Privateers' power was on display, drilling five home runs during the twin-bill.

Senior designated hitter Joe Scerra had a big game in the opening contest, launching two home runs and driving in four runs. His first round-tripper was a solo shot to right, in the bottom of the second, to extend Maritime's lead to 2-0. His second homer of the afternoon, and third for the season, was a three-run blast over the right field wall to give his team a commanding 7-0 lead, in the bottom of the fifth.

That would be all Maritime would need, as freshman pitcher Joe Ragone earned a complete-game victory on the mound, giving up just three hits, one earned run, and striking out six YU batters.

Yeshiva scored both of its runs in the top of the seventh, as freshman first baseman David Kreisberg and senior left fielder Aryeh Salovey scored on a throwing error to narrow YU's deficit to 10 runs. It would not be enough, as the Privateers earned the convincing game one victory.

For Yeshiva, Salovey went 2-for-3 with a stolen base, while Kreisberg drilled a double that led to YU's two-run inning. Junior shortstop Zachary Baly drew a walk. On the mound, Kreisberg started the game and went 4.1 innings to take the loss.

At the plate for the Privateers, sophomore left fielder Travis Zurita went 2-for-3 with four RBI, including a run-scoring double.

In game two, it was freshman right fielder Eric Wenig who supplied the power for Maritime, hitting three home runs during the contest. His two-run blast in the first inning gave the home team a 2-0 advantage.

Down 4-0 after two innings of play, Yeshiva got two back in the top of the third. With runners on first and second, one out, junior center fielder David Hanelin singled up the middle to score senior second baseman Shmuel Silverstein for Yeshiva's first run of the contest. Salovey was up next and ripped a single to left, allowing Baly to score and slice Maritime's lead to 4-2. Junior pitcher Travis Bruinsma was able to escape further trouble by retiring the next two YU hitters.

The Privateers countered with two runs in the bottom of the third, thanks to a two-run single off the bat of freshman catcher Ryan Rockhill. Sophomore center fielder Adam Mosca was up next and lined the ball to right center. Hanelin was able to field it and throw the ball to Silverstein, who threw out Rockhill at home plate to prevent Maritime from extending its lead.

However, Wenig's second and third homers of the game allowed Maritime to pull away and win the second-end of the doubleheader by a score of 11-2.

On the mound, freshman pitcher Blaise Delise got credited with the win, retiring all five batters he faced out of the bullpen. Bruinsma started the game and went 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out three batters.

For Yeshiva, Silverstein went 2-for-3 with a stolen base, while Salovey stole a base of his own. Baly produced a base hit and walked, while sophomore right fielder Matthew Garner earned a base on balls. On the mound, senior pitcher Mordechai Cohen started the game and took the loss, going 4.2 innings.

Yeshiva will take a break, and then play a nine-inning game against New York University, at MCU Park, on Tuesday, April 30. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
