Men's Volleyball Earns Key Skyline Win Over Mount Saint Vincent on Senior Night

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team earned a key Skyline victory over the College of Mount Saint Vincent, in straight sets, at the Max Stern Athletic Center on Wednesday evening. Set scores were 25-22, 25-13, and 27-25.

With the win, Yeshiva (7-9, 4-4 Skyline) moves into a tie for third-place with St. Joseph's College Brooklyn, in the Skyline Conference standings. Both teams are a half-game behind Purchase College for second place.

Senior outside hitter Chaim Aryeh Rubin led the way for the Maccabees by slamming home a match-high 15 kills, producing a hitting percentage of .500, tying a team-high with nine digs, recording two blocks, and scoring an ace. The Skokie native scored 17.5 points. Graduate libero Sibi Selvarajah anchored the defense with nine digs, while adding three kills on the attack. Graduate outside hitter Adam Gerszberg added six kills, three digs, and two blocks, while sophomore setter Isaac Pomerance led all players with 25 assists and added four digs.

The Maccabees led wire-to-wire in the opening game. Gerszberg slammed home three consecutive kills to give YU a cushion early in the set. Later in the stanza, Rubin executed a successful attack to extend YU's lead to 23-19. Gerszberg slammed the ball through CMSV's (1-14, 0-6 Skyline) defense to give the Macs a set-point opportunity, at 24-20. CMSV would stay alive by scoring the next two points, but junior middle blocker Yosef Ajami nipped the Dolphins' rally in the bud by scoring a kill to clinch the first game for the Maccabees.

The Dolphins jumped out to a 6-2 advantage in the second set. A service ace and a kill by Rubin highlighted a 5-0 Macs' run to give the home team the lead. With the match tied, 10-10, YU took over by finishing the set with a 15-3 run to go up 2-0 in the match and put Mount Saint Vincent on the brink. Rubin scored three consecutive kills during the rally.

Yeshiva came storming out of the gates in the third set, as a kill by Selvarajah put the Macs up, 7-0. After a kill by Rubin made it 10-4, YU, CMSV responded with five straight points to pull to within one. Later in the set, Rubin's successful attack put YU up, 16-14. However, Mount Saint Vincent scored four straight to go up by two. After falling behind, 20-19, Gerszberg produced a kill to propel YU to two straight points to regain the lead. Yeshiva earned three match-point opportunities, thanks to two kills from Selvarajah and a kill by Rubin. The Dolphins countered twice to stay alive in the match, but the third time was the charm for the Maccabees as an error on the attack clinched the Skyline win for Yeshiva.

For the match, sophomore outside hitter Jonathan Apsan slammed home four kills, while second-year outside hitter Joseph Sulaymanov had three kills with four digs. Ajami had a pair of kills, just as many assists, and six digs, while freshman libero Michael Stark picked up a kill, had an assist, and chipped in on defense with four digs. Sophomore setter David Fleschner registered a pair of assists to go along with four digs and senior setter Eliott Dosetareh had two digs, an assist, and a block.

For Mount Saint Vincent, sophomore middle blocker Jose Estrella had a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs, while adding four blocks.

Prior to the match, Yeshiva University honored its four graduating seniors, Dosetareh, Selvarajah, Amitai Miller, and Rubin with a ceremony.
