NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University softball team concluded its season with pair of non-conference losses to College of New Rochelle, by scores of 12-2 and 13-3, at Flowers Park on Friday afternoon. The Maccabees finish the 2019 season with a record of 4-26, while the Blue Angels advance to 17-17.
After the first two YU batters were retired in the top of the first, senior catcher
Sarah Hiller and sophomore shortstop
Miriam Kazlow combined for back-to-back singles. Second-year first baseman
Yael Itskowitz lined a single to center that scored Hiller and put YU up, 1-0.
The Blue Angels countered with three runs in the bottom frame to take a two-run lead.
In the bottom of the second, freshman center fielder Kassandra Register lined a double to center to score a pair of runs and extend CNR's lead to 5-1. New Rochelle added six more runs in the third, highlighted by a three-run double off the bat of junior right fielder Victoria Holmes, to increase its lead to 12-1.
In the top of the fifth, Kazlow added an RBI single to score sophomore second baseman
Chana Boltax, but it would not be enough as CNR went on to earn the convincing win, 12-2.
For the Macs, Hiller and Kazlow each went 2-for-3. Boltax and senior right fielder
Leah Feder each drew a walk, with the former stealing a base.
In the circle, senior pitcher
Samantha Cohen pitched a complete game, but took the loss. Sophomore pitcher Gaby Hay struck out seven batters in five innings to earn the win.
In game two, The Blue Angels scored three runs in the first, three in the second, and seven in the third, on its way to the sweep. Hay hit a three-run inside-the-park home run in the second, while junior pitcher Valerie Romano drove in three runs, courtesy of an inside-the-park round-tripper, of her own in the third.
Yeshiva scored all three of its runs in the top of the fifth. With runners on second and third, two outs, Hiller drove in two of those runs on a single. Kazlow followed with a run-scoring one-base hit to cap off the scoring for YU. It was not enough, as New Rochelle got the final out to earn the sweep.
For Yeshiva, junior left fielder
Basya Goldstein produced a single, scored a run, and stole a base. Boltax crossed home plate once and successfully stole a base. Kazlow also earned a stolen base, while sophomore second baseman
Malky Perlberger singled and scored a run.
Cohen pitched her second complete-game of the afternoon, but once again took the loss. Romano struck out 10 YU batters to pick up the complete-game victory.
Congratulations to Yeshiva's graduating seniors, Perlberger,
Sarah Elspas, Cohen, Feder, and Hiller, who played the final games of their collegiate careers.
