Women's Volleyball Loses Five-Set Heartbreaker to Cooper Union and Falls Short Against Mount Saint Vincent

NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University women's volleyball dropped two matches, on Sunday afternoon, at the ARC Arena. The Maccabees were defeated by the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent, in a Skyline match in straight sets, and then dropped a hard-fought non-conference contest to Cooper Union, 3-2.

In the five-set thriller against Cooper Union (1-1), set scores were 25-20, 21-25, 15-25, 25-12, and 15-13. In the opening game, a kill by senior middle blocker Tehilla Teigman gave YU (0-8, 0-3 Skyline) an 8-4 advantage. However, Cooper Union scored nine unanswered points to grab the lead, 13-8. Later in the set, it was Yeshiva's turn to rally, as back-to-back aces by senior right side hitter Batya Schreier, and two kills from junior outside hitter Rebekah Bargraser, highlighted a 7-1 YU run to tie the match, 17-17. The visiting team countered with a 7-1 run of its own to earn a set-point opportunity at 24-18. Yeshiva answered with two straight points, but Cooper Union managed to score the 25th point to take the first game.

Yeshiva improved in the second set, leading wire-to-wire. After Bargraser slammed home a kill to open the scoring, Schreier scored back-to-back aces to extend Yeshiva's lead to 3-0. Cooper Union made the set close towards the end, as three straight points by the visitors shrunk YU's lead to 24-21. However, Schreier slammed the ball through the opposition's defense and YU earned the win in game two to even the match at one set apiece.

Cooper Union jumped out to an early 5-3 lead in the third set. The Blue and White answered with a 10-3 run, highlighted by service aces from sophomore outside hitter Maya Rosen, junior right side hitter Julie Chase, and senior libero Ayelet Berger, to propel the Macs to a 13-8 hold. YU finished the game strong, as kills by junior setter Brooke Ratner and Teigman began a stretch of sevens straight points for Yeshiva to finish off Cooper Union in the third game, 25-15, to go up 2-1 in the match.

The Maroon and Yellow shifted momentum into its favor by scoring five unanswered points and never looked back, during the fourth set, as YU dropped the stanza, 25-12. A fifth and deciding set was needed to determine the winner of the match.

In the rubber game, sophomore middle blocker Devorah Chasen scored an ace to even it up, 3-3. After Yeshiva fell behind, 6-4, the Macs scored four straight points to go up, 8-6. During that run, Bargraser slammed home back-to-back kills and then Berger added an ace and a kill of her own. After Cooper Union grabbed a 10-9 lead, Bargraser and Chasen scored back-to-back kills to put YU back up by one. The visiting team took over from that point on, going on a 5-1 run to clinch the set, 15-13, and win the match, 3-2.

For the Maccabees, Bargraser just missed a double-double with 12 kills and nine digs, while adding four aces. Teigman had a solid match, offensively and defensively, with six kills and eight digs. Schreier generated a double-double with 13 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore middle blocker Rena Kahn and Chase each had three kills and five digs. Ratner added seven assists, four digs, and two kills. Chasen scored three kills.
