THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's basketball team kicked off 2020 in style, defeating Skyline opponent Maritime College by a score of 94-56, at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Wednesday evening. Yeshiva extends its winning streak to 13 games and advances to 6-0 in league play (13-1 overall). Maritime falls to 1-5 against conference competition (5-10 overall).
Four players reached double-figures in scoring for Yeshiva. Sophomore guard
Ryan Turell produced 20 points, while dishing out a game-best six assists and bringing down six rebounds. The Los Angeles native shot 8-for-11 from the field. Senior forward
Gabriel Leifer scored 18 points, brought down 14 boards to secure his 10
th double-double of the season, and distributed five assists. Senior guard
Simcha Halpert tallied a game-high 23 points, while freshman guard
Ofek Reef generated 11 points.
The Maccabees led from wire to wire, including a 13-0 run in the opening half that allowed Yeshiva to take a commanding 29-12 advantage. Leifer began the run with back-to-back layups off feeds from Turell. The Macs' run concluded with Reef receiving a pass from junior guard
Eitan Halpert, and successfully converting a layup while being fouled. He added the free throw to complete the three-point play and extend YU's lead to 17, with 10:14 remaining in the opening period. The Blue and White ended the half with a 10-3 run, highlighted by Leifer and
Simcha Halpert each nailing 3-point shots, to send Yeshiva to the intermission with a 59-30 hold.
The Macs outscored the Privateers, 35-26, in the final 20 minutes of the game. The highlight of the second stanza was
Eitan Halpert forcing a steal and then pulling up to nail a jump shot off a fast break to give Yeshiva its largest lead of the evening, at 90-46, with 5:29 remaining in regulation time. The Maccabees went on to win their 13
th straight game, by a score of 94-56, and remain undefeated in Skyline play.
For Yeshiva,
Eitan Halpert produced eight points, distributed four assists, and led all players with three steals. Senior guard
Bar Alluf went 2-for-2 from beyond the arc, while senior forward
Caleb Milobsky scored four points, brought down three boards, and blocked a pair of shots.
For Maritime, junior guard Brennan Whelan tallied a team-high 16 points.
The Maccabees will compete in their first home game of the new decade, on Saturday evening, against the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The Skyline contest at the Max Stern Athletic Center will begin at 8:30 p.m.
