NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team dropped its non-conference match to Brooklyn College, in straight sets, at the Max Stern Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon. Set scores were 25-22, 25-19, and 25-21.
Leading the way for the Maccabees (2-4) was senior middle blocker
Yosef Ajami, who tallied a match-high 12 kills, scored four aces, and chipped in on defense with five digs. Graduate libero
Sibi Selvarajah anchored the defense with 10 digs, while junior outside hitter
Joseph Sulaymanov added nine digs of his own.
The Maccabees got off to a strong start as a kill by Ajami gave his team a 9-4 advantage. Later in the stanza, the Bulldogs (5-8) scored seven straight points to jump out in front, 12-10. Two kills by Ajami sparked a YU rally that evened it up at 14 points apiece. Brooklyn eventually went on a 5-1 run to go up, 23-19. The Macs had one more rally in them as Ajami executed three straight successful attacks to narrow the opposition's lead to 23-22. However, the Bulldogs scored the last two points to clinch the first set, 25-22.
Brooklyn came storming out of the gate in the second game, jumping out to an early 8-2 hold. Yeshiva rallied later in the set, as an ace by Ajami and a kill from junior opposite hitter
Derek Orenshein capped off three straight points to pull YU to within three, at 19-16. However, the Bulldogs closed the second set strong with three straight scores to win the game, 25-19, and go up 2-0 in the match.
In the third set, sophomore middle blocker
Amitai Kolom slammed home a kill to put YU up, 6-4. After the Bulldogs jumped out in front, Yeshiva took advantage of a series of errors from the opposition to take a 14-9 advantage. However, Brooklyn went on a 13-2 run to take a commanding 22-16 benefit. Ajami willed Yeshiva back into the contest by scoring three aces during a 5-0 run that shrunk the Bulldogs' cushion to 22-21. However, Brooklyn scored the last three points to clinch the set and the non-conference victory.
For Yeshiva, sophomore setter
Benjamin Goldstein tallied 14 assists and a pair of aces. Orenshein had three kills and four digs, while sophomore middle blocker
Steven Zelmanovich slammed home two kills of his own. Kolom added three kills and four digs. Junior outside hitter
Jonathan Apsan produced one kill and two digs.
