Strong Second Set Against Baruch Highlights Women's Volleyball Team's Tri-Match

NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University women's volleyball team dropped two matches in straight sets on Sunday afternoon. Yeshiva fell to Baruch College in the opening match and was defeated by St. Joseph's College Long Island later in the day.

Against Baruch (8-14, 3-1 CUNYAC), set scores were 25-1, 25-20, and 25-4. After struggling in the opening set, the Maccabees (0-7, 0-6 Skyline) turned it around in the second game. Kills by senior outside hitter Rebekah Bargraser and sophomore middle blocker Hannah Aaron highlighted a 6-1 run that tied the set at 15 points apiece. Later in the stanza, successful attacks by sophomore outside hitter Shira Sredni and Aaron propelled the Maccabees to a 19-17 advantage. Yeshiva went up, 20-18, but Baruch closed the set strong by scoring seven unanswered points to earn a come-from-behind victory in the second game, 25-20, and increase its match-lead to 2-0. The Bearcats' momentum carried into the third set as the visiting team went on to earn the sweep.

For the contest against Baruch, Aaron had three kills and four digs. Sophomore libero Aleesa Elbaum led the way defensively with nine digs, while junior right side hitter Devorah Batt registered a pair of kills. Bargraser anchored the defense with five digs. Sophomore setter Keren Raskin recorded four assists and a pair of digs, while Sredni had a kill, a service ace, and two digs. Sophomore outside hitter Ashley Botnick had three digs and her twin sister Zoey Botnick had a dig of her own. Senior outside hitter Maya Rosen had a block and an assist.

During the Skyline match against St. Joseph's College Long Island (7-11, 5-3 Skyline), set scores were 25-9, 25-8, and 25-9. The Maccabees had an early lead in the second set, but the Golden Eagles went on to earn the conference victory.

For the Skyline matchup, Bargraser scored four kills, added a service ace, and recorded a pair of digs. Sredni had a strong match defensively with nine digs and contributed on offense with two kills and an ace. Raskin tallied nine assists and three digs. Rosen and junior right side hitter Emily Zrihen each had two kills with the former adding a dig.

Yeshiva will return to the Max Stern Athletic Center on Tuesday evening for a Skyline matchup against Mount Saint Mary College. First serve is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
