THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's basketball team suffered a hard-fought Skyline loss to College of Mount Saint Vincent, 77-58, at Riesenberg Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon.
Yeshiva had a strong second quarter, outscoring the opposition by a score of 21-13, and went into the locker room trailing 34-32. However, the Dolphins countered by dominating the third quarter, 23-9.
For the Maccabees, sophomore
Shai Rahamim and junior
Daniella Rothman each scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds, with the former dishing out four assists and forcing three steals, while the latter collected a pair of steals. Junior
Renee Benjamini had eight points and four rebounds, while senior
Rebecca Malech scored seven points and had just as many boards. Junior
Yuval Nitzan had a game-high five steals, distributed a team-high six assists, netted six points, and grabbed three rebounds.
The Dolphins led by 10 after the opening quarter. However, the Maccabees chipped away in the second stanza as back-to-back field goals by Malech and Rahamim shrunk YU's disadvantage to 21-15. After Mount Saint Vincent went up by seven, Rothman connected on back-to-back jumpers for Yeshiva to make it a one possession game at 26-23 with 5:10 left to play in the opening half.
The visiting team eventually inflated its benefit to 30-25. However, YU countered with a 5-0 run, thanks to a layup from senior
Miriam Kazlow and a 3-point field goal by Rahamim, to tie the game up at 30 points apiece. CSMV scored the next four points to pull ahead. However, YU finish the half strong as a successful jump shot by Malech shrunk YU's deficit to 34-32 with 52 ticks left on the clock. That would be the score after the break.
Mount Saint Vincent took the game over in the third quarter by going on a 14-2 run out of the gate to put Yeshiva in a 48-34 hole with 5:07 to go in the period. The Dolphins led by as many as 23 points during the second half as YU could not get back into the game. The Dolphins went on to earn the conference victory.
For the Maccabees, junior
Gabrielle Kupferman had five points, four rebounds, and a pair of assists. Kazlow tallied four points with two helpers. Junior
Noa Berkowitz snatched three caroms.
For the Dolphins, senior Victoria Hanley had a game-high 25 points, brought down eight rebounds, dished out four assists, and forced four steals. Classmate Dez Brown netted 23 points, clutched four boards, and had four steals.
Yeshiva will return to Riesenberg Gymnasium on Tuesday evening for a Skyline matchup against Purchase College. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
