NEW YORK – The nationally ranked No. 1 Yeshiva University men's basketball team earned a Skyline Conference victory over SUNY Old Westbury, 105-77, at the Max Stern Athletic Center on Saturday evening. The Maccabees remain undefeated at 10-0, and 7-0 in conference play, while extending its overall winning streak to 46 games.
Yeshiva led the contest from wire-to-wire.
"We did a great job moving the ball and moving bodies tonight," Yeshiva University Head Coach
Elliot Steinmetz said. "I liked our effort and the pace of the game."
The Maccabees dished out 33 assists as a team and shot 64.7% from the field (44-for-68), including 47.8% from beyond the arc (11-for-23).
Leading the way for Yeshiva was senior
Ryan Turell who tallied a double-double with 28 points and 12 rebounds, while shooting 12-for-18 from the field, and also distributed four assists. Classmate
Eitan Halpert netted 24 points, going 8-for-10 from 3-point range, while grabbing four rebounds and delivering four assists. Junior
Ofek Reef had a big game with 20 points, six steals, four rebounds, and just as many assists. Graduate student
Gabriel Leifer led all players with 12 assists, while scoring six points and bringing down five boards.
The Maccabees went on a 10-2 run early in the game to take a 25-11 hold with 11:13 remaining in the first period. Halpert began the run with a 3-point basket, while junior
Matan Zucker capped it off with a layup. YU inflated its lead throughout the remainder of the opening stanza as back-to-back successful shots from downtown by Turell and Halpert gave the Blue and White a commanding 55-29 benefit with 1:29 to go until the break. In the closing seconds of the half, Reef found Leifer who slammed the ball into the hoop to send the Maccabees into the intermission up by a score of 59-32.
The Macs led by as many as 38 in the second half. The Panthers could not generate a consistent run to get back into the game as the Maccabees went on to earn their 10
th victory of the season.
Zucker finished the game with 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Â Graduate student
Jordan Armstrong had a solid game with six points, five rebounds, and three blocked shots.
For Old Westbury, junior Carl Damour finished with 19 points. Classmate Jordan Johnson-Rader had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Zachary Cummings added 13 points and four assists. Senior Charles Wingate generated 11 points, three rebounds, and just as many assists.
Yeshiva will take on Brooklyn College, in a non-conference game at the West Quad Center, on Monday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Spectators are not permitted to attend Monday's game due to Brooklyn College's health and safety guidelines.
