BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team dropped its exhibition match to Sarah Lawrence College, in straight sets, at the Campbell Sports Center on Wednesday evening. Set scores were 25-6, 25-14, and 25-18.
Leading the way for the Maccabees was junior middle blocker
Alon Jakubowitz who tallied eight kills. Senior
Shimon Ohana anchored the defense with nine digs while helping the offense by adding eight assists. Junior middle blocker
Steven Zelmanovich added four kills and five digs, while second-year defensive specialist
Michael Stark tallied four digs and a pair of assists. First-year outside hitter
Benjamin Smillie helped on the defensive side with seven digs, while sophomore outside hitter
Asher Kirshtein recorded five digs of his own.
Sarah Lawrence cruised to a victory in the first game. After the Maccabees jumped out to a 4-2 advantage in the second set, the Gryphons went on a 19-2 run to put the game out of reach for the Blue and White. The home team went on to win the second stanza, 25-14.
Yeshiva got off to a great start in the third set, as a pair of kills by Jakubowitz, a kill each from Zelmanovich and Kirshtein, and a service ace by Ohana highlighted a 7-1 blitz to begin the frame. The Gryphons answered by executing an 8-2 rally to even the game at nine points apiece. Jakubowitz slammed home a kill to break the tie, and then Yeshiva eventually extended its lead to 11-9.
Sarah Lawrence countered by scoring six of the set's next seven points to jump out to a 15-12 advantage. Ohana then set Jakubowitz up for a kill to stop the home team's momentum. Jakubowitz scored another kill to highlight the Maccabees' 3-1 run that shrunk their deficit to 16-15. However, Sarah Lawrence was able to finish with a 9-3 run to clinch the third set and the exhibition victory
The Gryphons were led by freshman Nate Davis, who tallied a match-high 14 kills, scored six service aces, added nine digs, and generated three assists.
These two teams will meet again next Wednesday, at the Campbell Sports Center, beginning at 8:00 p.m.
