PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's tennis team earned a hard-fought Skyline Conference victory over Purchase College, 6-3, at the Purchase College Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon. The match was temporarily delayed and then concluded at the Armonk Indoor Sports Center due to the weather.
After being honored on her senior day with teammate
Meira Levine, third-year standout
Alexandra Huberfeld earned a gutsy come-from-behind win at No. 2 singles. After dropping the first set, 6-3, she rallied with thrilling victories in the second set, 7-5, and then the rubber set, 7-6 (3). Her victory in the second singles position closed out the match, and the victory, for the Blue and White.
"Alex (Huberfeld) has been great to have on the team," Yeshiva University Head Coach
Danielle Carr said. "She has really stepped up in her role as captain this year and led the team at the top singles spots (primarily at No. 1) throughout the season."
In doubles play, earlier in the day, rookies
Eden Hariri and
Elisheva Gofman were victorious in the second position, 8-3. First-year players
Lara Amar and
Meital Lindenberg won the third doubles flight via a walkover.
Gofman's momentum continued in singles competition, as she earned the victory in the third position, 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore
Anna Elfassy won a tight battle at the No. 4 spot, 7-6 (2), 6-2, which officially clinched the victory for the Maccabees. Lindenberg claimed No. 6 singles due to a walkover.
"It has been a unique season," Carr explained. "Despite the obstacles, we have been climbing the ladder every step of the way. Every match has been a learning experience filled with teachable moments and highs and lows. Today's win is a culmination of all the lessons we learned, and it was great that it came on senior day. We are so proud of Alex for her performance today and during her career. We are also proud of Meira, who has been a nice addition to the roster this year. Meira's effort and dedication this year certainly didn't go unnoticed."
Yeshiva will conclude the 2021 season with a Skyline match against Manhattanville College, at the Purchase College Tennis Courts, on Monday evening. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
