Baseball Opens 2022 Season With Hard-Fought Loss to MCLA

WEST HARRISON, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University baseball team opened its 2022 season with a non-conference loss to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, at Silver Lake Park, on Sunday afternoon.

The Maccabees (0-1) and Trailblazers (1-0) had seven hits apiece.

Yeshiva had a strong first inning. Graduate student, and starting pitcher, Dovie Solomon was dealing with a runner on first and one out. He got the opposing hitter to ground into a 1-4-3 groundball double play to escape the frame scoreless. In the home half of the first inning, junior Shai Rosalimsky drilled a single down the left field line and then stole second during the next at bat. After he advanced to third on a passed ball, senior David Kreisberg slapped an RBI single to center field to drive in Rosalimsky and give the Macs a 1-0 advantage.

The Trailblazers responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second to take the lead. In the bottom frame, senior SJ Tannenbaum led it off by smashing the ball to left center field for a double. Later, with Tannenbaum on third and two outs, senior Max Leibowitz singled to score Tannenbaum and even up the game at two runs apiece.

From that point on, MCLA took over by scoring a pair of runs in the third, two more in the fourth, and three more in the fifth to take a commanding 9-2 advantage.

Down by eight in the bottom of the seventh, the Maccabees drew three walks to load the bases with one out. Tannenbaum hit the ball deep enough to score sophomore Joshua Mintz for the sacrifice fly and narrow the Trailblazers' lead to 10-3. In the bottom of the eighth, Leibowitz scored off an RBI groundout off the bat of Kreisberg to narrow YU's deficit to 10-4. However, senior James Sneyd took the mound for the Trailblazers in the bottom of the ninth and struck out the side to clinch the victory for his team, 10-4.

For the Maccabees, Leibowitz went 2-for-4 with four stolen bases and a walk. Junior David Price singled in his only plate appearance. Mintz, sophomore Sammy Greenberg, and senior Justin Hanelin each drew a pair of walks with Greenberg hitting a double and Mintz stealing a base. Rosalimsky and senior Judah Blonder each drew a walk and scored a run.

On the mound, Leibowitz struck out three batters in his only inning of relief in the top of the ninth. Mintz pitched a scoreless inning, while senior Adam Zahler gave up just one hit in three innings pitched out of the bullpen.

For the Trailblazers, junior Tristen Ciarlo and sophomore Ty Mazzeo each produced a two-run single. On the mound, freshman Nathan Kumm got the win out of the bullpen by pitching three shutout innings and fanning four YU hitters.

Yeshiva will return to Silver Laker Park, next Sunday, for a doubleheader against John Jay College. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
