PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team suffered a pair of conferences losses at the Skyline Tri-Match, at the Danzi Center, on Sunday afternoon. YU fell to New Jersey City University, 3-0, and then was defeated by St. Joseph's College Long Island in straight sets.
In the match against the Gothic Knights (11-6, 1-2 Skyline), set scores were 25-12, 25-10, and 25-12. The Maccabees (1-3, 0-2 Skyline) had early leads in each of the three sets, but New Jersey City University went on big runs during all three stanzas on its way to the sweep.
For Yeshiva, senior
Alon Jakubowitz had five kills and two blocks. Classmate
Benjamin Smillie led all players defensively with 12 digs. Senior
Amitai Kolom had four kills, while second-year player
Benjamin Goldstein had six assists, two digs, and a kill. Senior
Michael Stark produced three digs and a pair of assists. Junior
Shmuel Aberman had two blocks, a service ace, and an assist. Classmate
Asher Kirshtein produced a pair of digs, while first-year player
Avi Braun chipped in with a dig of his own. Senior
Steven Zelmanovich slammed home a kill.
Against the host-Golden Eagles (12-2, 2-0 Skyline), set scores were 25-11, 25-14, and 25-10. St. Joseph's Long Island led from wire-to-wire in the second set, after only trailing briefly at the start of the first game, but YU had a strong start to the third stanza. A service ace from Aberman put YU in front, 4-3. After the home team inflated its advantage to 10-6, the Blue and White scored the next two points to pull to within two. However, the Golden Eagles scored the next 11 points, and finished the set on a 15-2 run, to clinch the conference victory.
During the match, Jakubowitz added seven kills and a block. Stark and Smillie each anchored the defense with seven digs, with the former tallying a pair of assists. Goldstein added four helpers. Kolom slammed home two kills. Aberman had two blocks, a service ace, and a dig. Zelmanovich tallied three digs, while Braun and sophomore
Akiva Kamornick each produced a dig.
Yeshiva will return to the friendly confines of Max Stern Athletic Center, on Tuesday evening, for a Skyline match against College of Mount Saint Vincent. First serve is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
