JAMAICA, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team closed out the 2022 season with a victory in straight sets over York College (N.Y.), at York College Gymnasium, on Wednesday evening. Set scores were 25-19, 25-15, and 25-16.
Leading the way for the Maccabees (5-13) was senior
Alon Jakubowitz who slammed home a match-high 11 kills, while scoring a service ace and producing a solo block. Junior
Shmuel Aberman produced six kills, a match-best four service aces, and three digs. Senior
Steven Zelmanovich tallied four kills and had just as many digs. Classmate
Benjamin Smillie produced a match-high 20 assists, slammed home a pair of kills, had just as many service aces, and added two digs.
In the opening set, a kill by Smillie and a service ace from Aberman highlighted a 5-1 YU run to give the Blue and White a 14-7 advantage. The Cardinals (0-17) chipped away and eventually pulled to within three, at 18-15. The Maccabees countered with five straight points to extent their benefit to 23-15. York scored four of the next five points to pull closer, but YU was able to score the 25
th point to go up 1-0 in the match.
During the second stanza, Jakubowitz provided back-to-back successful attacks, while Smillie added a service ace, to highlight a 4-0 run that extended the Macs' lead to 15-9. York scored four of the next five points to pull to within three. However, the Maccabees answered with an 8-1 rally to go up by a score of 24-14. The highlight of that blitz was a kill and an ace from Aberman. Yeshiva ended up taking the second set, 25-15, to put York on the brink.
The Maccabees fell behind in the third set, 8-5, but showed perseverance by scoring seven out of the next eight points, highlighted by an ace from Aberman and a kill from Smillie, to put the Blue and White in front, 12-9. After the Cardinals scored the next point, the Maccabees took off by scoring nine straight points to take a commanding 21-10 hold. Junior
Eliezer Benjamin scored three service aces, and Aberman added a kill, during YU's 9-0 run. With the Macs up, 23-16, Aberman and Jakubowitz finished it off with a kill and an ace respectively to clinch the set and the match for Yeshiva.
For the Maccabees, Benjamin added two kills. Senior
Avi Braun provided three digs. Classmate
Michael Stark chipped in with a dig of his own.
"We were missing some key guys but thanks to our team always being ready, we were able to get the clean sweep," Smillie said.
The Yeshiva University men's volleyball team will return to court in February of 2023.
