TEANECK, N.J. - The Yeshiva University men's soccer team earned a key Skyline victory in convincing fashion on Thursday evening, defeating Maritime College by a score of 8-0, at Votee Park.
The Maccabees (3-1-1, 2-1-1 Skyline) scored twice in the first half and then exploded for six tallies in the second period, including five goals in a span of 10:29.
Just under six minutes into the match, junior
Josh Ziarno tallied the opening goal of the game by taking a feed from classmate
Lucas Baredes and tapping the ball into the lower left corner of the net. It was the first of two goals that Ziarno scored as he also found the back of the net during the 56
th minute. This marks the second multi-goal match Ziarno has produced this year.
After providing the secondary assist on the opening goal, senior midfielder
Ethan Fettaya received a pass from sophomore
David Abittan and snuck the ball in from the right side of the box, during the 22
nd minute, to extend YU's lead to 2-0. That would be the score after 45 minutes of play. Fettaya finished the match with a goal and two assists.
Just over a minute into the second half, senior
Kevin Kozba found junior
Yonatan Reiter, who put the ball into the upper right part of the cage to inflate YU's cushion to 3-0. Just 42 seconds after Ziarno's second goal of the match, Baredes got free, ran down the left side, and lined the ball into the net for his fifth of the season to put Yeshiva up, 5-0. Senior
Benjamin Brener was credited with the assist on the play as he launched the ball to Baredes from the box, while serving as the goalkeeper. Less than six minutes later, Reiter notched his second goal of the night by heading the ball into the net off a corner kick to make it 6-0 in favor of the Macs.
Junior
Rafael Cohen and graduate student
Isaac Bendahan recorded YU's seventh and eighth goals respectively to round out the scoring.
For the match, Kozba and senior
Alexandre Assouline each provided a pair of assists. Cohen tallied a helper of his own.
In addition to his assist, Brener also made four saves in net for the Maccabees. He earned a shared shutout with rookie
Eli Cohen who made a save in relief.
YU had the heavy advantage in shots, 24-11, and corner kicks, 7-2.
