BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's volleyball team dropped its Skyline Conference matchup to Sarah Lawrence College, in straight sets, at Campbell Sports Center on Tuesday evening. Set scores were 25-11, 25-17, and 25-14.
Rookie sensation
Shany Elmaleh had another solid match to lead the Maccabees, as she slammed home four kills, produced seven digs, and registered an assist. Junior
Aleesa Elbaum had a strong defensive match with 10 digs, while scoring an ace and providing an assist on offense. Junior
Ashley Botnick once again put on a defensive clinic with eight digs. Senior
Tali Miller recorded six assists and five digs.
After falling behind, 8-3, in the first set, a service ace by senior
Emily Zrihen and a kill from Miller highlighted a 4-0 Macs run to cut the Gryphons' benefit to 8-7. After the home team scored the next three points, Elmaleh took the set play from Miller and knocked the ball down for a kill to pull the Blue and White to within three. However, Sarah Lawrence took over by scoring 10 unanswered points to inflate its hold to 21-8. Kupferman's kill and Elbaum's service ace contributed to a 3-0 run by YU to narrow its deficit to 21-11. The Gryphons countered by scoring the last four points of the set to win the opening game.
In the second stanza, Yeshiva scored four straight points to tie it up at six points apiece. Later in the set, a kill by senior
Devorah Batt evened up the set, 9-9. Sarah Lawrence once again answered by going on a big run, scoring 11 of the game's next 12 points to take a commanding 20-10 advantage. The Maccabees would not go down without a fight, as kills by Elmaleh and Kupferman highlighted four straight points to pull YU to within six, at 20-14. A few rallies later, Yeshiva pulled to within five at 21-16. However, Sarah Lawrence finished strong by going on a 5-1 run to close out the second set and put Yeshiva on the brink.
YU managed to jump out to a 3-2 lead in the third game. After the Gryphons surged to a 6-3 advantage, a kill by Batt highlighted a mini 2-0 run by the Macs to pull them to within one. But as they have done throughout the evening, Sarah Lawrence answered with a blitz, this time going on a 7-1 run to inflate its lead to 13-6. Yeshiva could not generate a consistent run to get back into the set as Sarah Lawrence went on to earn the sweep.
For the Maccabees, Batt had three kills. Junior
Zoey Botnick produced a kill, three assists, and a pair of digs. Kupferman registered a block, while sophomore
Adira Sklar scored a kill.
For the Gryphons, junior Kaille Ferguson led all players with 15 digs. Classmate Mia Rector had a double-double with 13 digs and 10 service aces, while slamming home seven kills. Senior Davis Mathis added seven kills of her own.
Yeshiva will host SUNY Old Westbury, in a Skyline match at ARC Arena, on Thursday evening. First serve is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
